Separation Techniques and Practicals

Simple distillation works brilliantly when you need to separate liquids with very different boiling points, like getting pure water from seawater. You heat the mixture in a distillation flask, and the component with the lower boiling point evaporates first, travels through a condenser (cooled by running water), and gets collected as a pure liquid.

When dealing with liquids that have similar boiling points, fractional distillation is your go-to method. The clever addition of a fractionating column means that higher boiling point substances condense and flow back down whilst lower boiling point substances continue up and get collected first.

Crystallisation is perfect for separating soluble solids from solutions. Heat your solution in an evaporating dish until it becomes concentrated, then remove from heat at the point of crystallisation. As it cools, beautiful crystals form which you can filter and dry.

Top Tip: For filtration of insoluble products, always use filter paper in a funnel - the liquid passes through whilst solid residue stays behind on the paper.

Gas chromatography identifies unknown substances by injecting them into a long tube coated with thick liquid. Different chemicals have different retention times as they travel through, creating distinctive peaks on a graph that act like chemical fingerprints.
