THE GEODYNAMO THEORY WHAT IS THE GEODYNAMO THEORY? The Geodynamo theory is the theory that the centre of the Earth is made from a core of solid iron, surrounded by a liquid core of iron and nickel. The spinning action of the Earth causes the liquid metal core to spin in a regular way, this movement causes charged particles to move, forming small electric currents. These electric currents produce magnetic fields and so magnetic domains form in the liquid metal, and they line up to create a weak magnetic field. The Geodynamo theory is only a theory because it cannot be proven as we cannot get to the centre of the Earth. THE EARTH'S MAGNETISM The Earth behaves as if it is a giant magnet. It produces a magnetic field in which the field lines are most concentrated at the poles(the North Pole and the South Pole). This magnetic field can be detected using magnets or a compass. Earth's magnetic field is useful for navigation. This is because the needle on a compass is magnetic and can show us the direction of the North Pole. We know opposite poles attract. On a compass, the north pole of the compass attracts to the South Pole and vice versa. The effect of the Earth's magnetic field extend nearly 60,000 kilometres in...

space. EFFECTS OF THE EARTH’S MAGNETIC FIELD Scientists have discovered that birds have a compass in their brains for navigation. The magnet points north, as a result of the Earth's magnetic field. As well as this, birds can supposedly see the Earth's magnetic field due to a chemical in the eye known as a cryptochrome. The magnetic field can have an effect on the electricity in our technology, but not us humans using them.
A short, simple presentation about The Geodynamo theory.
