CONSERVATION OF MASS A Chemical reaction is a change that takes place when one or more substances (called reactants) form one or more new substances (called products) reactants -products No atoms are made or destroyed. The reaction just changes how the atoms are bonded together. EXAMPLE: Lead Nitrate + Potassium iodide Lead iodide + Potassium Nitrate 10.12g + 10.25g → 20.37g Actual yieid - 20.13g Percentage yield= actual x 100 theoretical = 20.13 x 100 = 98.8% 20.37 ↳ In practise, the percentage yield is never 100% ↳ Reaction may not have finished. LOSS Wasteage /Spillage Innaccuracy theoretical yield.
