POPULATION POLICIES COMPARISON BANGLADESH ANTI-NATALIST POLICY WHAT WAS IMPLEMENTED Bangladesh implemented an outreach program throughout the country, where females went door to door spreading information on having less children, motivating families, and providing contraceptives to help prevent pregnancies. luding BANGLADESH'S COST While the overall cost of the program was about $100 million to $150 million per year, most of the funds came from outside donors. FERTILITY RATES & SIDE EFFECTS 441711832 RATE PRE-POLICY 6.82 POSITIVE SIDE EFFECTS Almost all women in Bangladesh know about family-planning methods • The use of contraceptives in married women increased from 8% to 60% in just over 30 years Primary school enrollment almost doubled for boys and nearly tripled for girls RATE POST-POLICY 2.01 ● FERTILITY NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS Bangladesh's policy isn't sustainable, as giving people information can only be done so much, so if they had another spike in fertility rates they would need a new policy • No women was forced into not having more children, so women could continue to have kids if they wanted POPULATION POLICIES COMPARISON FRANCE PRO-NATALIST POLICY WHAT WAS IMPLEMENTED France implemented a program to encourage families to have 3 or more children, they gave/give a cash reward of £675 monthly to mothers that stayed home for a year after their third child, large reduction on train fairs, taxes reduced for the # of children a family had, three years paid parental leave, and government subsidies daycares and full time schools. GDP (gross domestic product) in the country's direct spending on families is the second highest within HICs with a 4 FERTILITY RATES & SIDE EFFECTS ВУ АДПИВЗА RATE PRE-POLICY 1.67 POSITIVE SIDE EFFECTS • Most couples no longer need a multitude of children to care for them when they are older Some families benefited from the cash incentives, especially benefitting poor households Fertility rates slightly increased which is a positive, but it is predicted that the policy will not have the desired effect ● RATE POST-POLIC ● FERTILITY NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS France has input a plethora of its funds every year, and it's seeming that they are not getting the effect they initially wanted 1.87 Couples who can't have 3 children, as the policy requires will miss out on the policies' benefits, like subsidies schooling and cash incentives EVALUATION Overall, even though France's Pro-Natalist policy had an increase in fertility rate with 0.2%, it was such a small amount and it's still below replacement level. Comparing this to Bangladesh's extremely successful Anti-Natalist policy with a decrease of 4.81% and using significantly less funding per year, I would say that Bangladesh's Anti-Natalist Policy was more effective than France's Anti-Natalist Policy.
