ROCKS AND MINERALS & THE ROCK CYCLE Earth's crust is made of rock. The sand on the beach, the mountains, the soil in our yards - all of it is technically rock. And rock is made of different minerals. every up MINERALS are the building blocks of rock. It is an element or chemical compound that is normally crystalline and that has been formed as a result of geological processes IGNEOUS ROCKS are formed by cooled magma (molten rock). Obsidian, or volcanic glass, forms in lava flows on Earth's surface. Topaz SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Clay METAMORPHIC ROCKS are formed when layers of sediment build up ove time and get compressed into rock. Sediment is mainly just particles of dirt and dust-the broken bits of other rock. But it can also be made of the remains of living things. Granite Talc Sandstone CARBON 10 MOHS LAB are formed when igneous or sedimentary rock is placed under enormous heat or pressure. For example, marble is a metamorphic rock that forms when limestone is subjected to a lot of heat. Corundum Pumice COMPOSITION HARDNESS SOURCE Coal CARBON 10 MOHS MINED Obsidian Marble IMPORTANT FACT: MAN-MADE DIAMONDS Diamonds form deep below the Earth's surface when carbon is heated to 1,093 degrees Celsius, under pressure equal to 50,000 atmospheres. Scientists have been able to make synthetic (man-made) diamonds for years. These industrial diamonds are useful for lots of different things. LAB GROWN VS. rocks are created equal. The rock cycle shows how the different types of rock on Earth form. Geologists classify rocks based on how they form. Magma - Melting Metamorphic Roc Cooling Melting MAIN IDEA OF ROCK CYCLE: Heat and Pressure Igneous Rock Weathering and Erosion Heat and Pressure Weathering and Erosion Weathering and Erosion Sediment Sedimentary Ro Compaction and Cementation JAMES HUTTON (1726-1797) is attributed with the concept of the rock cycle. Rocks are continually changing from one type to another and back again. Elements that make up rock aren't destroyed or created, they are just being recycled. Igneous rock can change into sedimentary rock or into metamorphic rock. Sedimentary rock can change into metamorphic rock or into igneous rock. Metamorphic rock can change into igneous or sedimentary rock. Igneous rock forms when magma cools and makes crystals. Magma is a hot liquid made of melted minerals. The minerals can form crystals when they cool. Igneous rock can form underground, where the magma cools slowly. Or, igneous rock can form above ground, where the magma cools quickly. On Earth's surface, wind and water can break rock into pieces. They can also carry rock pieces to another place. Usually, the rock pieces, called sediments, drop from the wind or water to make a layer. The layer can be buried under other layers of sediments. After a long time the sediments can be cemented together to make sedimentary rock. In this way, igneous rock can become sedimentary rock. IMPORTANT FACTS: HOW ROCKS CHANGE HEAT AND PRESSURE Heat from the Earth's interior can melt rock and pressure from overlying rock can also morph rocks from one type to another. Heat and pressure work together and this is known as metamorphism, thsu creating metamorphic rocks. MELTING AND COOLING Temperatures between 600 and 1300 degrees Celsius melt rock and turn it into magma. Any rock that forms from cooling magma is an igneous rock. Two Types of Igneous Rock: (1) Intrusive --> from from slowly cooling magma inside the earth (2) Extrusive --> form from cooling lava above/on earth's crust. WEATHERING AND EROSION Weathering the breaking apart or wearing down of rock due to water, wind, gravity, temperatures and other elements at the earth's surface, creating sediments. Erosion transportation of weathered material via water, wind or gravity. - COMPACTING AND CEMENTING Compacting Sediment formed from weathering and erosion accumulates in oceans, lakes and valleys, allowing for layers of sediment to build up. Cementing when water passes through spaces between particles of sediment, this helps cement the particles together forming sedimentary rock.
