French Tenses Present Tense The present tense is used to describe actions or events happening currently or actions that are habitual in nature. Pronoun Je Tu Il/Elle Nous Vous Ils/Elles o Je -e Je o Tu -es Tu o Il/Elle -e Exceptions: • Verbs ending with -er have a slightly different conjugation: o Vous -ez Verbs Pronoun -e -es -e French Tenses -ons -ez o Nous -ons -ent Imperfect Tense The imperfect tense is used to describe past habitual or ongoing actions. o Ils/Elles -ent Verbs -ais -ais 1 Il/Elle Nous Vous Ils/Elles -ait -ions Exceptions: • Here are some sample conjugations of the irregular verbs in the imperfect tense: être (to be) O j'étais -iez o tu étais o o o vous étiez o ils/elles étaient • aller (to go) o j'allais o tu allais -aient il/elle était nous étions • avoir (to have) o j'avais o tu avais o il/elle avait o nous avions o vous aviez o ils/elles avaient • voir (to see) French Tenses o il/elle allait o nous allions o vous alliez oils/elles allaient 2 o je voyais o tu voyais o il/elle voyait o nous voyions o vous voyiez oils/elles voyaient Future Tense The future tense is used to describe actions that will happen in the future.
