Psychopathology Behavioural characteristics of OCD DSM-5 categories of OCD Repetitive behaviour accompanied by obsessive thinking OCD characterised by either obsessions and/or compulsions. Most people have both Compulsions Repetitive Reduce anxiety Avoidance OCD Attempt to reduce anxiety by keeping away from situations that trigger it E.g. washing compulsively to avoid coming into contact with germs Emotional characteristics of OCD Paper 1 Anxiety and distress Obsessive thoughts are unpleasant and frightening, and anxiety can be overwhelming Urge to repeat behaviour creates anxiety Accompanying depression Anxiety often brings about low mood and lack of enjoyment in activities Guilt and disgust Sometimes involves negative emotions such as irrational guilt Cognitive characteristics of OCD Obsessive thoughts 90% of OCD sufferers have obsessive thoughts Cognitive strategies to deal with obsessions People may respond to obsessions by adopting cognitive coping strategies E.g. a religious person tormented by obsessive guilt may respond by praying Insight into excessive anxiety Psychopathology Paper 1 People are aware their obsessions/compulsions are not rational OCD sufferers have thoughts about worst case scenarios that might result if their anxieties were justified. They also maintain constant alertness
