Types of Solid Waste: Not All Garbage is Equal

Solid waste can be divided into two main categories: non-municipal and municipal solid waste.

Non-municipal Solid Waste: This includes solid waste from industries, agriculture, mining, and oil and gas production. It makes up almost 99% of all waste in the US. This isn’t your everyday kitchen trash; it includes hefty items like construction materials and wastewater sludge.

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW): This includes waste from homes, businesses, and city buildings. While only 1% of the total waste in the US, MSW includes everything from food scraps to paper, which alone accounts for about 40% of the waste stream.

Hazardous Waste: A particularly nasty subset of solid waste, hazardous waste includes materials that are toxic, carcinogenic, highly flammable, corrosive, or explosive. Hazardous waste can cause severe harm to human health and the environment, hence its strict regulations. Waste Disposal: What Do We Do With It?

Here’s how we handle the waste:

Landfilling: Still the most common method, landfilling involves dumping waste in either a hole or a mound and covering it with clay or plastic to prevent it from being scattered by wind or wildlife. Sanitary landfills use multiple layers to prevent contamination and have systems in place to collect methane gas produced from decomposing waste.

Ocean Dumping: Once-popular, it’s now banned in the US. Dumping waste into the ocean created massive pollution problems, turning our oceans into giant, salty dumpsters.

Incineration: This involves burning waste at super high temperatures to reduce its volume. While effective in reducing waste, it can release pollutants into the air.

Recycling and Composting: These methods involve repurposing waste materials. Recycling turns waste into new products, and composting transforms organic waste into nutrient-rich soil.

Waste-to-Energy Conversion: This method converts waste materials into energy, like electricity or heat. It’s akin to turning trash into treasure.



Mass Burn Incinerators: Burning High and Mighty

Mass burn incinerators are facilities that burn municipal solid waste at high temperatures, reducing the volume of waste by up to 85%. They operate at over 1000 degrees Celsius, producing compact ash.

Despite their efficiency, these incinerators also release pollutants like particulate matter and dioxins that can harm human health and the environment. Plus, they consume significant energy and produce ash that still needs landfilling.

In the US, around 15% of MSW is incinerated, but concerns over pollution and cost have made this method less popular.



Effects of Improper Waste Disposal: Nightmare Scenarios

Improper waste disposal can wreak environmental havoc and pose severe health risks. When waste isn’t managed correctly, it can contaminate air, water, and soil, harming wildlife and ecosystems.

For example, used tires left unattended can become mosquito breeding grounds, spreading disease. Ocean dumping creates floating islands of trash, harmful to marine life, and wildlife can become entangled in or ingest waste, leading to injury or death.

Contaminated sites from past improper disposal practices pose public safety risks. The EPA’s Superfund program lists over 1,400 sites needing cleanup.

Accidents involving hazardous or nuclear waste, like the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 or the Fukushima incident in 2011, demonstrate the catastrophic potential of improper waste management.



Examples of Global Waste Disposal Disasters

Around the world, improper waste disposal has led to infamous environmental disasters:

  • Love Canal, New York: In the 1950s, toxic chemicals disposed of in a canal led to severe health problems for nearby residents.
  • Bhopal, India: The 1984 gas leak at a chemical plant killed thousands, highlighting the dangers of poor waste management.
  • Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill: In 2010, an oil rig blowout caused one of the worst environmental disasters, releasing millions of barrels of oil into the ocean.
  • Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Washington: Poor storage of nuclear waste from the 1940s and 1950s continues to pose significant environmental risks.
  • Landfills in Developing Countries: Lack of proper waste management infrastructure leads to unregulated, overcrowded landfills that contaminate soil and groundwater.
