Working with Surds - The Basics
Think of surds like algebra terms - you can only add or subtract surds when they have the same number under the square root sign. For example, 5√2 + 3√2 = 8√2, but you can't simplify 4√2 + 3√3 because the numbers inside are different.
Simplifying surds is all about spotting square number factors. Keep a list handy: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49... When you see √12, notice that 12 = 4 × 3, so √12 = √4 × √3 = 2√3.
Multiplying surds becomes straightforward once you remember that √5 × √5 = 5 (the square root disappears). For different surds like √8 × √10, multiply to get √80, then simplify: √80 = √(16 × 5) = 4√5.
Quick tip: When expanding brackets like (3 + √2)(2 + √5), use FOIL just like with normal algebra - multiply each term in the first bracket by each term in the second.
Rationalising Denominators
Nobody wants messy square roots on the bottom of fractions, so we use rationalising to clean them up. When you've got a simple surd denominator like √6, multiply both top and bottom by the same surd to eliminate it.
For trickier denominators like (3 - √2), you'll need the conjugate method. Swap the sign to get (3 + √2), then multiply both numerator and denominator by this expression. The magic happens because (3 - √2)(3 + √2) = 9 - 2 = 7, giving you a rational number.
This technique works because when you multiply , the surd terms cancel out completely. It's like the difference of two squares pattern you've seen before, but with surds involved.
Remember: Rationalising doesn't change the value of your fraction - you're just presenting it in a cleaner, more acceptable mathematical form.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!!
