Treaty of London - 1518
England had a massive image problem in the early 1510s. Despite Henry VIII's big talk about military victories in France, the country was actually weak and friendless - no other European power wanted to team up with England against France.
Wolsey saw his chance when the Pope asked European rulers to unite against Turkish threats in 1518. He cleverly organised a meeting in London, getting ambassadors from across Europe to agree to the Treaty of London - essentially a "no fighting" pact where any country attacking another would face punishment from everyone else.
The treaty was a diplomatic triumph that made Henry look like Europe's peacemaker. It secured peace between England and France, and even arranged a future marriage between Henry's daughter Mary and Francis I's son. However, the success was short-lived - England was back at war with France by 1521, proving that even the most impressive diplomatic victories can crumble quickly.

Field of Cloth of Gold - 1520
Picture this: over 300 golden tents shimmering in a French valley, creating what looked like a field made of gold. For two and a half weeks in June 1520, Henry VIII and Francis I of France put on the most spectacular diplomatic show in European history.
Every detail was planned to show mutual trust and respect. The meeting site was deliberately chosen in a valley so neither king camped higher than the other. They even swapped wives for dinner - Henry dined with Francis's wife Claude whilst Francis ate with Catherine of Aragon!
The entertainment was legendary: jousting tournaments, mock battles, and team competitions between nobles. The kings wisely avoided jousting each other directly, but Henry couldn't resist challenging Francis to a wrestling match. Big mistake - Henry lost, which must have been pretty embarrassing! Despite the spectacle, this meeting was more about show than substance, highlighting how Renaissance diplomacy often prioritised appearances over lasting political gains.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!!
