Let's dive into early American history, exploring the first European... Show more

Ever wonder who first set foot in America? While Columbus gets most of the credit, the Vikings actually arrived first! The Vikings discovered Newfoundland and northern Canada but their settlements didn't last long.
Columbus made a greater impact by establishing permanent connections between Europe and the Americas starting in 1492. He traveled between the Caribbean and Spain four times, bringing back gold and goods. Interestingly, Columbus died believing he had reached the Indies, never realizing he'd found a new continent.
The age of exploration took off around 1492 due to several key developments. Technological advancements like the compass, astrolabe, improved ships, and the printing press made long voyages possible and helped spread information. Religion also played a major role, with many explorers claiming to spread Christianity while actually searching for gold and resources.
Fun Fact: After Columbus's voyages, Spain's gold supply increased by a whopping 500%! No wonder so many explorers followed in his footsteps.

The Spanish led the way in exploration, sending numerous explorers who forever changed the Americas. Núñez de Balboa discovered the Pacific Ocean, while Ponce de León searched for the fountain of youth and found Florida instead. Magellan began the first circumnavigation of the globe (though he died before completing it).
Some Spanish explorers became conquerors. Cortez defeated the powerful Aztec Empire, while Pizarro conquered the Incas. DeSoto explored from Florida to the Mississippi River, and Coronado ventured from New Mexico to Kansas. The Spanish often conquered native peoples, sometimes enslaving them or forcing them to work.
Other European nations soon joined the exploration race:
Remember This: Different European nations focused on different regions - Spain in the Caribbean, Central and South America; France along major waterways; England along the Atlantic coast; and the Dutch in the New York area.

The French were strategic in their exploration, focusing on waterways that could lead to valuable trade routes. Verrazano explored the New York Harbor area, while Champlain established the first French settlements at Quebec and Montreal.
Marquette and Joliet made an impressive journey searching for the Northwest Passage. They traveled through the Great Lakes to Green Bay, then portaged (carried their canoes) from the Fox River to the Wisconsin River, eventually reaching the Mississippi. When they encountered Spaniards, they turned back northward.
By the early 1600s, England was ready to start serious colonization efforts. Three factors made this possible: defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588, economic troubles in England that made people eager for new opportunities, and the development of joint stock companies where investors pooled money to finance colonies.
Quick Tip: Remember that where explorers settled, they often named places after their homeland - "New France," "New Amsterdam," etc. These names give clues about who first colonized different regions!

In 1607, King James I gave the Virginia Company a charter (official permission) to start a colony in the "new world." Their settlement, Jamestown, faced numerous challenges from the start. The location was basically a swamp, leading to rampant diseases from mosquitoes and contaminated water.
Many early colonists weren't prepared for the harsh realities of settlement. They were often from wealthy backgrounds, unused to hard work, and more focused on finding gold than on survival. This created a serious problem until John Smith took charge and implemented a strict "work or leave" policy.
After Smith was injured and returned to England, John Ralfe saved the colony by introducing tobacco as a cash crop. He had stolen tobacco seeds from the Spanish (which could have gotten him killed if caught), but this risky move paid off - tobacco became the "gold" they had been searching for.
Important Context: Growing tobacco required extensive labor, which led the Virginia Company to introduce indentured servants - people who received free passage to America in exchange for about 7 years of labor. This system eventually gave way to slavery as labor demands increased.

By the 1620s, the Virginia Company faced mounting problems. Native American attacks threatened the colony, and financial troubles led to bankruptcy. King James revoked their charter, turning Virginia into a royal colony under his direct control.
Meanwhile, religious motivation drove the founding of Plymouth and the Massachusetts Bay colonies. The Separatists (also called Pilgrims) rejected the Church of England and initially fled to the Netherlands before deciding to try the New World. Their ship, the Mayflower, landed in Massachusetts rather than Virginia as planned.
That first winter was brutal - half of the approximately 100 colonists died. Leaders like William Bradford and Miles Standish helped survivors work with native peoples to learn survival skills. After a successful harvest, they celebrated the First Thanksgiving, marking their achievement.
Think About This: While Jamestown was founded primarily for profit, Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay were established for religious freedom - showing how different motivations led to different types of colonies.
Religious persecution continued in Europe, leading to the "Great Migration" of the 1630s. About 15,000 Puritans settled near Massachusetts Bay, with the first 1,000 arriving in 1630 under John Winthrop's leadership.

The Spanish established settlements much earlier than the English, starting with St. Augustine, Florida in 1565. Interestingly, most people living in Spanish territories weren't actually from Spain - they often incorporated local populations into their colonies.
In New Mexico , Spanish control wasn't always secure. The Pueblo people, led by Popé, revolted and forced the Spanish out for about 20 years! This pushed Spanish settlement toward Texas.
The Spanish established a series of missions throughout California - religious centers designed to convert natives to Christianity. As the Russians began moving down from Alaska, these missions evolved into military forts when soldiers arrived to protect them.
Compare and Contrast: While the English focused on establishing permanent colonies of their own people, the Spanish focused on conquering existing populations and converting them to their religion and way of life.
The French established settlements at strategic points including New Orleans, Quebec, and Montreal. Their settlements were often smaller than English or Spanish colonies but were positioned to control important trade routes, especially for the fur trade.

Each European power had a different approach to dealing with Native Americans. The Spanish were generally the harshest, conquering native peoples and spreading diseases that devastated populations. However, they did try to incorporate survivors into their empire rather than simply displacing them.
The English initially maintained friendly relations with natives, especially when they needed help surviving. However, cultural differences quickly led to conflict. The English viewed natives as "savages," partly because of religious differences and different concepts of land ownership. Unlike the Spanish, the English rarely intermarried or integrated with native populations.
The French maintained the best relationships with Native Americans. This was largely practical - the fur trade that was central to French colonization required native expertise and labor. The French had fewer settlers than the English or Spanish, so they relied more heavily on cooperation with natives.
Historical Insight: The different approaches to native relations affected colonial development significantly. The French often allied with natives in conflicts against the English, while the English tendency to displace natives led to recurring conflicts along their expanding frontier.

Have you ever wondered how the colonies were governed? There were three main types: charter colonies (granted by the king to companies or individuals), proprietary colonies (owned by individuals), and royal colonies (under direct control of the king). Eventually, all colonies would become royal colonies.
Maryland began as a proprietary colony when Charles I divided up Virginia and gave part to George Calvert (Lord Baltimore). Calvert had two goals: making money and creating a haven for Catholics. When he died, his son Cecil took over and wealthy English Catholics came to establish plantations.
However, Protestants soon outnumbered Catholics in Maryland. Since Protestants controlled the colonial assembly, Cecil feared they might overthrow Catholic leadership. He convinced the assembly to pass the Act of Toleration, which protected religious freedom for all Christians .
Historical Twist: Even though Maryland was founded as a Catholic haven, by the late 1600s Protestants had gained so much power that they repealed the Act of Toleration and took away Catholics' right to vote!

Life in colonial Virginia was marked by growing inequality. Large tobacco plantation owners dominated the government, with Governor William Berkeley clearly favoring their interests over small farmers living on the frontier.
When Native American attacks threatened these frontier farmers, Berkeley did nothing to help. By 1676, these farmers had enough and revolted under the leadership of Nathaniel Bacon. This rebellion reveals important tensions in colonial society.
Bacon and his followers attacked Native American villages and then turned their attention to Berkeley himself. They marched to Jamestown, defeated Berkeley's soldiers, and burned the settlement to the ground. The rebellion only ended when Bacon suddenly died of dysentery. Berkeley then brutally punished the remaining rebels.
Critical Thinking: Bacon's Rebellion revealed two important facts about colonial America: the growing divide between the wealthy elite and poor farmers, and colonists' willingness to challenge royal authority when they felt wronged.
In Maryland, religious tensions continued to simmer. Despite the Act of Toleration, Protestants eventually rebelled against having a Catholic governor. Their success in eliminating religious protections for Catholics shows how political power was shifting as population demographics changed.

The New England colonies developed differently from the Chesapeake colonies, with religion playing a more central role. Many were founded by Puritans who had been banned from Massachusetts for various religious disagreements.
Rhode Island emerged as a colony committed to religious freedom. Roger Williams, expelled from Boston in 1636, settled in Portsmouth, while Anne Hutcherson established Providence. Unlike many colonists, they recognized Native American land rights and paid for the land they settled.
In 1644, Roger Williams received a charter officially establishing Rhode Island as a colony. Its commitment to complete religious toleration made it unique among the colonies and attracted various religious groups seeking freedom from persecution.
Big Idea: Rhode Island's founding principle of religious tolerance was revolutionary for its time and foreshadowed later American ideals of religious freedom.
Connecticut also became known as a refuge for different faiths. The New England colonies generally operated under the economic theory of mercantilism, which held that colonies existed primarily to benefit the mother country - a concept that would eventually lead to conflict as colonial interests diverged from England's.

I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades

Not only did it help me find the answer but it also showed me alternative ways to solve it. I was horrible in math and science but now I have an a in both subjects. Thanks for the help🤍🤍

The app's just great! All I have to do is enter the topic in the search bar and I get the response real fast. I don't have to watch 10 YouTube videos to understand something, so I'm saving my time. Highly recommended!

In school I was really bad at maths but thanks to the app, I am doing better now. I am so grateful that you made the app.

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend

Best app if you're in Highschool or Junior high. I have been using this app for 2 school years and it's the best, it's good if you don't have anyone to help you with school work.😋🩷🎀

This app is phenomenal down to the correct info and the various topics you can study! I greatly recommend it for people who struggle with procrastination and those who need homework help. It has been perfectly accurate for world 1 history as far as I’ve seen! Geometry too!
