Photographic Techniques in Lucy Jones' Art

Lucy Jones' artistic process begins with careful consideration of photographic techniques that capture the essence of Georgian style architecture. Her approach to photography plays a crucial role in creating the foundation for her mixed media works.

When taking primary photos, Jones pays particular attention to angles and perspectives that emphasize the grandeur of Georgian buildings. She often crouches down and angles her camera upwards, a technique that glorifies the structures and focuses on streets and pathways.

Highlight: Jones' photographic technique of shooting from low angles creates a sense of awe and monumentality in her depictions of Georgian architecture.

The artist's focus on streets and corners, as well as local benches and pathways, often results in compositions with looping and curvy elements. This approach adds a sense of mystery and appreciation for architectural details, rather than presenting entire building facades.

In post-processing, Jones employs various editing techniques to enhance her photographs. One key adjustment is increasing saturation, which allows for stronger, brighter colors. This step is particularly important for the collage aspect of her work, as it helps create vibrant and eye-catching compositions.

Example: By increasing saturation in her photographs, Jones can create a more vivid base for her mixed media works, enhancing the overall impact of her Georgian style interiors and exteriors.

The artist also experiments with different editing techniques to create interesting effects. For instance, she may use pencil sketches combined with collage elements as an initial step in developing the basic shapes and background for her work. This layered approach contributes to the depth and complexity of her final pieces.

Jones' photographic process demonstrates her keen eye for architectural details and her ability to transform ordinary urban scenes into compelling artistic compositions. Her photographs serve not only as reference material but also as integral components of her mixed media creations.

Analysis of Lucy Jones' "Kimpton Doorway, Charlotte Square"

Lucy Jones' mixed media piece "Kimpton Doorway, Charlotte Square" exemplifies her unique approach to capturing the essence of Georgian style homes and architecture. This 55x76cm work, displayed at Gallery TEN Kimpton, showcases Jones' masterful use of color, contrast, and texture to evoke a sense of history and atmosphere.

The artwork is dominated by a striking contrast between deep blue details and yellowy-browns, which effectively portrays Jones' fascination with the Georgian Era. This color palette serves a dual purpose:

  1. It highlights the architectural features characteristic of Georgian style architecture.
  2. It symbolizes the passage of time from the Georgian period to the present day.

Highlight: The intense blue tones juxtaposed against the darker, rusty browns create a visual representation of the historical depth embodied in Georgian architecture.

The composition of the piece is carefully constructed to give viewers a sense of being overpowered by the building. Jones achieves this by presenting the structure from a low angle, making it appear to glare down upon the observer. This perspective choice is a hallmark of her style, emphasizing the imposing nature of Georgian architecture.

Quote: "The image as a whole gives off the atmosphere similar to Jekyll and Hyde, a gothic feeling of mystery and misplacement with the structure choices and an overpowering feeling of submission to the building presented above the viewer, glaring down upon them."

Jones' technique in rendering the building is noteworthy. The distinct brush strokes she employs characterize the structure as weathered and emotionally charged. This approach adds a layer of complexity to the piece, suggesting not just the physical attributes of the building but also its history and the passage of time.

Vocabulary: Gothic - In this context, referring to a style that evokes feelings of mystery, darkness, and the supernatural, often associated with 18th and 19th-century literature and architecture.

True to her mixed media approach, Jones incorporates elements of collage into this work. The inclusion of newspaper or old scrap paper adds a literary aspect to the piece, making it more immersive and multi-dimensional. This technique is characteristic of Jones' style, blending visual art with textual elements to create a richer narrative.

The overall effect of "Kimpton Doorway, Charlotte Square" is a powerful representation of Georgian style architecture that goes beyond mere depiction. Through her unique artistic lens, Lucy Jones invites viewers to experience the grandeur, history, and emotional resonance of Georgian buildings in a deeply personal and evocative way.

Lucy Jones: A Welsh Artist's Georgian-Inspired Creations

Lucy Jones, a Welsh artist currently residing in Edinburgh, has made a name for herself with her unique approach to capturing the essence of Georgian style architecture. Her studio, located in Edinburgh's New Town, serves as the perfect backdrop for her architectural-inspired artwork.

Jones' artistic journey began with her education at art schools in London and Norwich, culminating in her current practice in Scotland's capital. Her work primarily consists of mixed media paintings and collages that depict buildings from the Georgian period, often from a lower ground perspective looking upwards.

Highlight: Jones' signature style involves creating a sense of being overpowered by looming buildings, offering viewers a unique perspective on urban landscapes.

The artist's creative process is deeply rooted in her appreciation for her surroundings. She frequently embarks on walks around Edinburgh, capturing numerous photographs that serve as inspiration for her work. This hands-on approach allows her to intimately connect with the architectural elements that define her art.

Example: Jones often focuses on streets and corners with tall buildings, emphasizing their imposing presence and the feeling of being dwarfed by urban structures.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Jones' work is her experimental approach to materials and techniques. She combines different types of paints and pastels, layering them in unconventional ways to achieve her desired effects. This willingness to break traditional rules of artistic expression contributes to the unique character of her pieces.

Vocabulary: Impasto - A technique in painting where paint is laid on an area of the surface in very thick layers, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible.

Jones' use of materials extends beyond conventional art supplies. She incorporates what many might consider "rubbish" into her work, including scraps of paper from old bags, envelopes, and wrapping paper. Her preference for found materials in earthy tones adds authenticity to her creations.

Definition: Mixed media - An artwork in which more than one medium or material has been employed.

The artist's collage work often features backgrounds created from old books, maps, and sheet music sourced from charity shops. This literary visual element adds depth and meaning to her depictions of buildings and streets, transforming them from mere architectural representations into complex narratives.
