Emergency Care: Seizures and Strokes Seizures A seizure is an abnormal pattern of electricity in the brain Can cause convulsions Involuntary muscle movements Some known causes are Brain damage Epilepsy High fever Consuming drugs or poison Signs and symptoms of seizures Symptoms right before a seizure can include Feeling anxious Nausea Dizziness Seeing bright lights or spots Signs and symptoms of a seizure include Uncontrolled eye movements Metallic or bitter taste in mouth Quick loss of consciousness Drooling, grunting, or snorting Uncontrolled body movements Loss of bladder or bowel control Emergency care for seizures Assess the scene for safety and note the time the seizure started Put gloves on Carefully place the person on the floor Remove any sharp or hard objects from the area Loosen any clothing around the neck and remove glasses Cushion the person's head When the convulsions stop, turn the person on their side Remain with the person Call 911 if necessary When seizures are emergencies Call 911 if The person has never had a seizure before The person has two or more seizures in a row The seizure is longer than five minutes The person is unconscious or has trouble breathing after convulsions end The person is pregnant The person suffered major injuries from the convulsions Seizure first aid Do not put anything in the persons mouth Do not give the person found Do not restrain the person Stroke overview Stroke is what happens when the brain doesn't get an adequate...
