Types of Tropical Cyclones
Here's something that confuses loads of people - hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons are actually the same type of storm! The only difference is where they form on the planet.
Hurricanes develop in the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic, which is why Americans are always talking about hurricane season. Cyclones form in the Indian Ocean and South East Pacific, affecting places like Australia and India.
Typhoons are the Pacific Ocean version, forming in the North West Pacific and often hitting Japan, the Philippines, and coastal China. Same storm system, different postcodes!
Remember: It's all about location - the storm type just tells you which ocean basin you're looking at.
