How did Hitler become Chancellor? Revision Notes October 1929: Wall Street Crash occurs. Stock exchange collapses leading to a worldwide economical depression. Factories closed down due to goods not selling → unemployment Growth of extremist parties eg Communists and Nazis. Hitler promised jobs, called the Treaty of Versaille a crime and blamed Jews for economical issues. 1930: Chancellor Bruning runs Germany poorly. He raises taxes in an attempt to solve Germany's economical crisis bread prices rise. Social democrats win election with Nazis close behind. March 1932: President Hindenburg calls for re-election as his term runs. out. To win, he needs 50% of votes. Hitler also ran for President of Reichstag. Hindenburg - 49.6% NSDAP (Hitler) - 30%, Thalman (communists) - 14% April 1932: In 2nd election, Hindenburg wins 53% of votes. July 1932: Another election is held, Nazis become the most popular party in Reichstag with 2.30 seats. Hitler demands to be made chancellor but Hindenburg refuses as he deems Hitler untrustworthy. (kept) Instead, he appoints Centre Party Franz von Papen. (May 1932) July 1932: Hitler refused to cooporate - Hindenburg called. another election. November 1932: Nazis Lose 34 seats in the election, and are running short on money. Von Papen resigns. December 1932: 39 business tycoons signed a petition requesting Hitler be appointed. Hindenburg hated Hitler but knew Von Papen was too unpopular to stay....

January 1933: Von Papen plots with Hitler - Hitler will be Chancellor and Von Papen will be in cabinet in order to take revenge after being sacked. Von Pupen sees Von Schleicher struggling to keep majority in Reichstag. admits Von Schleicher die defeat in raising support in Reichstag - he must resign. Hindenburg wants Von Papen back but is advised against it. 30th January 1933: Hindenburg says "It is my unpleasant duty to appoint this fellow, Hitler, as Chancellor."
