Understanding the Pythagorean Theorem
The Pythagorean Theorem states that in any right triangle, the sum of the squares of the two legs equals the square of the hypotenuse. This is written as the equation a² + b² = c², where a and b represent the legs and c represents the hypotenuse.
A right triangle has one angle that measures exactly 90 degrees (a right angle). You can spot a right angle by looking for an "L" shape or a small square drawn in the corner of the triangle. This special triangle is the only type where the Pythagorean Theorem works.
In the triangle, the two sides that form the right angle are called the "legs" (labeled a and b). The longest side, which is always opposite the right angle, is called the hypotenuse (labeled c).

To verify a triangle is right, plug all three side measurements into the equation a² + b² = c². For example, with sides 3, 4, and 5: 3² + 4² = 5² simplifies to 9 + 16 = 25, which is true! This confirms it's a right triangle.
Finding the hypotenuse is straightforward when you know both legs. If a = 5 and b = 12, then c² = 5² + 12² = 25 + 144 = 169. Taking the square root of both sides: c = √169 = 13.
To find a missing leg when you know the other leg and hypotenuse, rearrange the formula. For instance, if a = 8 and c = 10, then 8² + b² = 10², so b² = 100 - 64 = 36, meaning b = 6.
