3. The Buddha's Life and its Significance ● The Buddha = The enlightened / awoken one Born around 500BCE (Nepal) Was a prince Queen Maya (his mother) had a dream that a white elephant came down from heaven and entered her womb. The elephant told her that she would give birth to a holy child, and that when he was born he would achieve perfect wisdom. When she gave birth he could walk and talk without any support. • Shortly after his birth, a prophecy was made that he could become either a great king or a revered holy man. At 29 Siddhartha decided to go outside of the palace walls with his chariot driver (Channa). He then saw the four sights which are recorded in the Jataka: Old Age, Illness, Death and a Holy Man ● ● ● Finding the answer to the problem of suffering became the most important thing in Siddhartha's life, when he saw the four sights he left the palace, cut his hair and gave up all of his luxury possessions. After he left the palace, Siddhartha tried various methods to learn how to overcome the problem of suffering. He began to live as an aesthetic (living a simple and strict lifestyle) for 6 years. Because his life as an aesthetic didn't help him find answers he developed the middle way between two extremes; ...realising the practice of such austerities was not the path to enlightenment he went about gathering alms...'. Jataka '...but not until I attain the supreme Enlightenment will I give up this seat of meditation' Buddha in Jataka When Siddhartha began to meditate there are stories of how Mara, the evil one, appeared to try to stop him from achieving enlightenment. He: 1. Sent his daughters to seduce him 2. Sent his armies to attack him 3. Offered Siddhartha control over his kingdom 4. Mara tried to attack Siddhartha Siddhartha stayed focused on his enlightenment, and fear, lust, pride or other negative emotions were overcome with a disciplined mind. During the night that Siddhartha became enlightened, he experienced three important realisations. These are called the three watches: 1. Gained knowledge of previous lives. 2. Understood the repeating cycle of life, death and rebirth. People are born based on Karma. 3. Understood why suffering happens and how to overcome it.
