The Gilded Age and Progressive Era marked a transformative period... Show more
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw dramatic changes in American industry, characterized by rapid growth, technological innovation, and the consolidation of corporate power. Industrialization in America during this period transformed the nation's economy and society.
Key developments in industrialization included:
Vocabulary: Economies of scale refer to the cost advantages that businesses obtain due to their scale of operation, with cost per unit of output decreasing with increasing scale.
The assembly line, pioneered by figures like Eli Whitney and Henry Ford, revolutionized manufacturing by dramatically increasing efficiency and output. This innovation was a crucial factor in the American Industrial Revolution timeline.
Corporate consolidation took two main forms:
Example: John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company is a classic example of horizontal integration, as it acquired or drove out competitors to dominate the oil industry.
These developments led to unprecedented concentrations of wealth and power, sparking public concern and eventual government intervention through antitrust legislation like the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890.
Quote: Andrew Carnegie promoted the "Gospel of Wealth," arguing that the rich had a moral obligation to use their wealth for the public good through philanthropy.
The rapid industrialization of the Gilded Age led to significant demographic shifts, with millions of immigrants arriving in the United States and a mass migration to urban centers. What was life like for immigrants during the gilded age? was characterized by both opportunity and hardship.
Key aspects of urban life during this period included:
Vocabulary: Tenements were overcrowded, often unsanitary apartment buildings that housed many poor and immigrant families in urban areas.
Factory owners often exploited workers, particularly women, children, and immigrants, by paying low wages and providing unsafe working conditions. This exploitation contributed to growing labor unrest and the formation of unions like the Knights of Labor.
Highlight: The Knights of Labor, founded in 1869, was one of the first major labor unions in the United States, advocating for better working conditions and an eight-hour workday.
Political machines, led by powerful bosses, emerged in many cities to fill the void left by inadequate municipal governments. These organizations provided services and assistance to immigrants and the poor in exchange for political support.
Example: Tammany Hall in New York City, led by the infamous "Boss" Tweed, was one of the most powerful political machines of the era.
While political machines often engaged in corruption and graft, they also played a crucial role in helping immigrants navigate life in their new country, providing jobs, housing assistance, and other services.
The conditions of urban life during the Gilded Age ultimately contributed to the rise of progressive reform movements aimed at addressing issues of poverty, public health, and political corruption.
The Gilded Age and Progressive Era spanned from the late 19th century through the early 20th century, marking a period of dramatic economic, political and social change in the United States. This era saw rapid industrialization, mass immigration, and urbanization alongside growing inequality and political corruption.
Definition: The term "Gilded Age" refers to the superficial glitter of wealth that masked underlying social problems during this period of rapid economic growth.
Why is it called the Gilded Age stems from the contrast between the ostentatious wealth of industrialists and the poverty experienced by many workers and immigrants. The era was characterized by:
Highlight: The Gilded Age saw extreme concentrations of wealth, with industrialists like John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie amassing unprecedented fortunes.
What caused the Gilded Age was a combination of factors including technological advancements, abundant natural resources, a large labor pool from immigration, and government policies favoring business interests. This period of rapid growth set the stage for the reform movements of the Progressive Era in the early 20th century.
Example: The development of new technologies like the assembly line, pioneered by Henry Ford, dramatically increased industrial productivity and output.

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
