日清・日露戦争の基本概要
明治維新後の日本は、欧米列強に植民地化されないよう「富国強兵」政策で軍事力を強化していた。その結果、朝鮮半島をめぐって清と衝突し、続いて満州の利権をめぐってロシアとも対立することになった。
この時代に覚えておくべき重要な出来事がいくつかある。甲午農民戦争（東学党の乱）は1894年に朝鮮で起きた農民反乱で、これが日清戦争のきっかけとなった。
三国干渉では、ロシア・ドイツ・フランスが日本に遼東半島を返すよう圧力をかけ、まだ力の足りない日本は屈服せざるを得なかった。これが「臥薪嘗胆」のスローガンを生み、ロシアへの対抗心を強める原因になったんだ。

日清戦争（1894-1895）- アジア初の近代戦争
朝鮮で甲午農民戦争が起こると、朝鮮政府が清に援軍を要請した。日本もこれに対抗して出兵し、両軍が衝突して戦争が始まった。
日本軍は黄海海戦をはじめ陸海両戦で優勢に戦いを進めた。戦争に勝利した日本は下関条約（1895年）を結び、清から台湾・澎湖諸島・遼東半島を獲得し、2億両という巨額の賠償金も手に入れた。
しかし、ここで三国干渉が発生。ロシア・ドイツ・フランスが「遼東半島を返せ」と圧力をかけてきた。まだ列強に対抗できる力のない日本は、泣く泣く遼東半島を清に返還することになる。
この屈辱が国民のロシアに対する敵意を高め、「臥薪嘗胆」（がしんしょうたん）というスローガンが生まれた。日本は初の植民地として台湾を獲得し、帝国主義国家の仲間入りを果たしたんだ。
重要ポイント: 下関条約では台湾獲得＋賠償金ありだが、三国干渉で遼東半島は返還！
日露戦争への道のり
三国干渉後、ロシアは満州や朝鮮半島への影響力をどんどん強めていった。1900年の義和団事件では、ロシアが満州に大軍を送り込み、事件後も撤兵しなかった。
日本はロシアの南下政策に危機感を抱き、1902年に日英同盟を締結した。イギリスも南下するロシアを警戒していたため、両国の利害が一致したんだ。これで日本はロシアとの戦争でイギリスの支援を得ることができた。
この同盟は日本外交の大勝利で、なぜ小国日本が大国ロシアと戦えたかの鍵がここにある。イギリスがロシアの同盟国フランスの参戦を牽制してくれたからこそ、日本は一対一でロシアと戦うことができたんだ。
日露戦争（1904-1905）では、東郷平八郎率いる連合艦隊が日本海海戦でロシアのバルチック艦隊をほぼ壊滅させる歴史的勝利を収めた。ただし陸戦は激戦で、日本の損失も非常に大きかった。
覚えよう: 日英同盟があったから日本はロシアと一対一で戦えた！
日露戦争の結果と国際的影響
両国とも戦争継続が困難になり、アメリカ大統領セオドア・ローズヴェルトの仲介でポーツマス条約（1905年）が結ばれた。日本は韓国に対する指導権、遼東半島南部の租借権、南満州鉄道の利権、南樺太を獲得した。
しかし、賠償金は一銭も取れなかった。これに国民は激怒し、日比谷焼打事件などの暴動が起こった。戦争に勝ったのに生活が楽にならないことへの不満が爆発したんだ。
それでも国際的影響は計り知れなかった。有色人種国家が白人国家に勝利した初の例として、アジアやアフリカの民族独立運動に大きな影響を与えた。日本は欧米列強と肩を並べる「一等国」として認められるようになった。
この勝利は1910年の韓国併合への道も開くことになる。日本は近代国家として大きく飛躍したが、同時に近隣諸国との関係も複雑になっていった。
テスト頻出: ポーツマス条約では南樺太獲得だが賠償金なし！下関条約と混同注意。
2つの戦争の違いとテスト対策
日清戦争と日露戦争の違いをしっかり整理しておこう。日清戦争では下関条約で台湾と賠償金を獲得、日露戦争ではポーツマス条約で南樺太を獲得したが賠償金はなしだ。
三国干渉の参加国は「ロシア・ドイツ・フランス」で、イギリスは入っていない点も重要。これが後の日英同盟の伏線になっている。
戦争のきっかけも混同しやすい。日清戦争は甲午農民戦争、日露戦争は義和団事件後のロシアの満州駐留が直接の原因だ。
