States of Matter and Particle Behaviour

Solids are like a perfectly organised crowd where everyone stays in their exact spot. The particles have strong forces holding them together in a rigid lattice arrangement, so they keep a definite shape and volume. These particles can only vibrate in place - the hotter it gets, the more they shake about!

Liquids are more like people at a busy market - they stick together but can move around randomly. The forces between particles are weaker than in solids, so liquids have a definite volume but take the shape of their container. As temperature rises, these particles move faster and faster.

Gases are total freedom! The forces between particles are so weak that they zoom around with completely random motion. They have no definite shape or volume, expanding to fill whatever space they're in.

Quick Tip: Think of particle forces like friendship groups - solids are inseparable best mates, liquids are casual friends who hang out, and gases are acquaintances who barely interact!

Changes of State

When substances change from one state to another, it's all about energy and particle forces. The stronger the forces between particles, the more energy you need to break them apart - which means higher melting and boiling points.

The main changes of state follow a simple pattern: solids can melt into liquids or sublimate directly into gases. Liquids can freeze into solids or boil into gases. Gases can condense into liquids or undergo deposition straight into solids.

You can actually predict what state a substance will be in just by checking the temperature against its melting and boiling points. If it's below the melting point, it's solid. Between melting and boiling points? It's liquid. Above the boiling point? Gas!

Exam Hack: Remember that energy input breaks particle forces apart (solid → liquid → gas), while energy removal lets them come back together (gas → liquid → solid).

State Symbols in Chemistry

When writing chemical equations, you absolutely must show what state each substance is in using state symbols. These little letters in brackets tell you exactly how substances will behave during reactions.

The four essential state symbols are: (s) for solid, (l) for pure liquid, (g) for gas, and (aq) for aqueous solution (basically anything dissolved in water). Getting these right is crucial for predicting how reactions will work.

These symbols might look simple, but they're incredibly important for understanding chemical behaviour. A substance dissolved in water (aq) will react very differently from the same substance as a solid (s)!

Memory Trick: Think "Solid, Liquid, Gas, Aqueous" - and remember that aqueous always means "swimming in water"!

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
