The Evolution of Atomic Theory
Ever wonder what everything around you is made of? The answer lies in atomic theory, which has transformed dramatically since the 1800s. The journey of understanding atoms shows how science constantly improves through new discoveries.
In 1803, John Dalton proposed that the smallest particle of matter was indivisible and indestructible. His theory stated that atoms of the same element are identical to each other—a revolutionary concept for its time. This provided the foundation for all future atomic research.
By 1897, J.J. Thomson discovered the electron, proving atoms weren't indivisible after all. His work showed that these smaller particles had both mass and electrical charge, challenging previous beliefs about atomic structure.
Think About It: Each atomic model didn't replace previous ones entirely—they built upon earlier discoveries. This is how science typically progresses—through continuous improvement rather than complete rejection of past ideas.
Ernest Rutherford made another breakthrough in 1911 with the discovery of the proton. His experiments revealed that atoms weren't compact as previously thought, but had electrons spinning around a central structure.
Finally, in 1913, Niels Bohr proposed that electrons move in specific energy levels or orbits. His revolutionary model explained that electrons can't exist just anywhere around the nucleus—only in certain allowed levels. When electrons jump between levels, they absorb or emit energy as photons, explaining how atoms interact with light.
