Chemistry explores the fascinating world of matter and its behavior.... Show more

Chemistry is the study of matter's properties and behavior at both visible and molecular levels. Matter is anything with mass that occupies space, and understanding it is central to all science. The properties of matter allow us to recognize and distinguish different substances from one another.
At the core of chemistry is the study of atoms, the fundamental building blocks that make up all matter. When atoms join together, they form molecules with specific shapes and arrangements. The composition (types of atoms) and structure (arrangement of atoms) determine how matter behaves.
What makes chemistry so powerful is how it connects our everyday observations to what's happening at the atomic level. When you see water boil or metal rust, chemistry explains these visible changes by examining invisible molecular interactions.
Did you know? Chemistry is often called the "central science" because it connects physics, biology, geology, and other sciences. Understanding chemistry gives you a foundation for exploring almost any scientific field!

Matter exists in three main states with distinct characteristics. Gases have no fixed shape or volume and can be compressed because their molecules move rapidly with lots of space between them. Liquids maintain their volume but take the shape of their container as molecules slide past each other. Solids have fixed shape and volume because their molecules are locked in place.
Temperature and pressure can convert matter from one state to another. When water freezes or boils, the molecular arrangement changes while the composition stays the same.
Chemistry classifies matter into different categories. Pure substances have consistent properties and composition - they're either elements (substances that cannot be broken down further, like oxygen) or compounds (substances made of two or more elements, like water). The law of constant composition tells us that compounds always contain the same elements in the same proportions.
Mixtures combine two or more substances where each keeps its chemical identity. They can be heterogeneous or homogeneous (uniform throughout, like air).
Remember this: The key difference between compounds and mixtures is that compounds have fixed ratios of elements, while mixtures can have varying proportions of their components.

Understanding the properties of matter helps chemists identify and work with different substances. Physical properties can be observed without changing a substance's identity - like color, density, and melting point. Chemical properties describe how substances react to form new materials, like flammability.
Properties can also be classified as extensive (depend on the amount of substance, like mass) or intensive (independent of amount, like temperature). Intensive properties are particularly useful for identifying substances since they remain constant regardless of sample size.
When matter changes, it undergoes either a physical or chemical change. In a physical change, the appearance changes but the composition stays the same - like ice melting into water. In a chemical change, substances transform into chemically different ones - like wood burning into ash and gases.
Think about it: When you boil water, it changes from liquid to gas (physical change), but the molecules remain H₂O. When you burn hydrogen in oxygen to make water, that's a chemical change because new substances form!

Scientists have developed clever ways to separate mixtures based on physical properties. Filtration separates solids from liquids using a filter paper. Distillation separates liquids with different boiling points by heating a mixture and condensing the vapors. Chromatography separates substances based on how they adhere to surfaces.
In chemistry, we need precise measurements to describe our observations. Quantitative measurements give us numbers, while qualitative observations provide descriptions. The scientific method guides how chemists work - they gather information, identify patterns, form hypotheses, test them, and develop theories.
The metric system provides standard units for scientific measurements, with the SI units (kilogram, meter, second, kelvin, mole, ampere, and candela) being the preferred choice. These units help scientists communicate their findings consistently and accurately.
Pro tip: When separating mixtures, choose your technique based on the physical properties that differ between components. For instance, use distillation when components have different boiling points, and filtration when one component is solid and the other is liquid.

Temperature measures how hot or cold something is and determines the direction of heat flow. Heat always moves from higher temperature to lower temperature objects. Several temperature scales exist: Celsius (water freezes at 0°C, boils at 100°C), Kelvin , and Fahrenheit (water freezes at 32°F, boils at 212°F).
No measurement is perfect - all contain some uncertainty. Precision refers to how close repeated measurements are to each other, while accuracy tells us how close measurements are to the true value. A measurement can be precise (consistent) but inaccurate (consistently wrong).
Significant figures communicate the certainty of a measurement. The rules for determining significant figures are straightforward: all non-zero digits are significant, zeros between non-zero digits count, zeros at the start of a number don't count, and zeros at the end count if there's a decimal point.
Measurement tip: When reporting your lab results, include the right number of significant figures. Too many suggests false precision, while too few loses important information. The number of significant figures tells other scientists exactly how certain you are about your measurement.

Exponential notation helps chemists work with very large or very small numbers while clearly indicating significant figures. For example, 1.03 × 10^-3 g has three significant figures, while 1.030 × 10^-3 g has four.
When performing calculations with measured values, specific rules ensure the result reflects the appropriate precision:
For addition and subtraction, the result should have the same number of decimal places as the measurement with the fewest decimal places. For multiplication and division, your answer should contain the same number of significant figures as the measurement with the fewest significant figures.
Following these rules prevents implying more precision than your data actually contains, which is crucial for scientific integrity. Remember that your calculation can't be more precise than your least precise measurement.
Calculation tip: When working through chemistry problems, keep track of significant figures throughout. Save rounding for your final answer to avoid introducing additional errors in multi-step calculations.
