Text Types and Their Characteristics
A text is a form of written communication containing ideas, information, or feelings. Understanding different text types helps you communicate more effectively for different purposes.
Descriptive texts aim to describe a thing, person, place, or event to create a clear image in the reader's mind. They use adjectives and descriptive words to provide detailed portrayal showing the characteristics of something.
Persuasive texts aim to convince the reader or listener to accept a viewpoint or take action. They use emotional statements and arguments to persuade readers, focusing on acceptance or convincing of opinion, often using examples and testimonials.
Argumentative texts provide strong arguments to prove a statement or idea. They contain evidence, counterviews, and logical reasoning, showing a clash of ideas using analysis and evidence to support an opinion or position.
Writing Tip: Identify your purpose before starting to write. Are you trying to describe, persuade, argue, inform, tell a story, or give instructions?
Informative texts provide knowledge and information to readers without bias or opinion—just facts and data. They're objective without personal viewpoints and provide clarity on topics or issues.
