Kinetic Energy Basics
Every moving object possesses kinetic energy - from a car speeding down the motorway to a football flying through the air. This energy depends entirely on motion, which means stationary objects have zero kinetic energy.
The faster something moves or the heavier it is, the more kinetic energy it contains. This is why a lorry moving at 30 mph has much more kinetic energy than a bicycle at the same speed.
Quick Tip: Remember that kinetic energy only exists when there's movement - no motion means no kinetic energy!
What Affects Kinetic Energy?
You can boost an object's kinetic energy in two main ways: making it heavier or making it faster. However, speed has a much bigger impact than mass because it's squared in the equation.
Doubling the mass doubles the kinetic energy, but doubling the speed quadruples it! This is why speed limits are so important - a car travelling at 80 mph has four times more kinetic energy than the same car at 40 mph.
Think about it practically: would you rather be hit by a heavy ball moving slowly or a lighter ball moving really fast?
Real-world Connection: This explains why motorsport crashes at high speeds are so much more dangerous than low-speed collisions.
Calculating Kinetic Energy
The kinetic energy equation is surprisingly straightforward: KE = ½mv². Here, KE represents kinetic energy (measured in joules), m is mass (in kilograms), and v is velocity (in metres per second).
Notice that velocity is squared - this is why doubling speed has such a dramatic effect on kinetic energy. Always remember to square the velocity before multiplying by the other values.
When using this equation, make sure your units are correct: mass in kg, velocity in m/s, and your answer will be in joules. Getting the units right is half the battle in physics calculations!
Exam Tip: Always write down the equation first, then substitute your values - it shows your working clearly and helps avoid mistakes.
Rearranging the Equation
Sometimes you'll know the kinetic energy but need to find the mass or velocity instead. Don't panic - you just need to rearrange the equation!
To find mass: m = 2KE/v². To find velocity: v = √. These rearranged versions are incredibly useful when you're given different pieces of information in exam questions.
Practice makes perfect with equation manipulation. Start with the basic KE = ½mv² and work through the algebra step by step until you're comfortable switching between all three versions.
Study Strategy: Create a formula triangle with KE at the top, and ½m and v² at the bottom - this visual aid makes rearranging much easier!
