Understanding Reinforcement and Punishment

Let's break down how operant conditioning actually works in your daily life. When you get praise from a teacher for giving the right answer, that's positive reinforcement - you're getting something good, so you're more likely to participate again.

Negative reinforcement isn't punishment (common mistake!). It's when you do something to avoid something unpleasant - like handing in homework to avoid getting told off. You're still more likely to repeat the behaviour because it helped you escape trouble.

Punishment is the odd one out here - it's an unpleasant consequence that makes you less likely to repeat a behaviour. Skinner's experiments perfectly demonstrated these principles using his specially designed boxes with rats and levers.

Exam hint: Make sure you can distinguish between negative reinforcement (avoiding something bad) and punishment (receiving something bad) - this trips up loads of students!

Evaluating the Behaviourist Approach - Strengths

The behaviourist approach has some serious credibility in psychology. Its biggest strength is the scientific credibility - all those carefully controlled lab experiments with measurable results give it proper scientific backing that's hard to argue with.
