The Beginnings of Psychology: Exploring Its Foundations

Founders of Psychology
Psychology began as a formal discipline when Wilhelm Wundt opened the first psychology research lab in 1879. Often called the "father of psychology," Wundt defined psychology as the study of consciousness and established it as a scientific discipline using experimental methods.
William James contributed by focusing on how behavior helps humans and animals adapt to their environments. His massive textbook "Principles of Psychology" and his concept of functionalism were groundbreaking. Meanwhile, G. Stanley Hall earned the first PhD in psychology in America, founded the first US psychology lab at Johns Hopkins University, and established the American Psychological Association (APA).
Women pioneers faced significant barriers but made remarkable contributions. Mary Whiton Calkins completed all PhD requirements but was denied the degree because she was a woman. Despite this, she conducted important research on dreams, memory, and personality. Margaret Floy Washburn became the first American woman to receive a psychology PhD.
Did you know? While many people think Sigmund Freud was the father of psychology, that title actually belongs to Wilhelm Wundt. Freud came later with his psychoanalysis theory focusing on the unconscious mind!
Early Psychological Perspectives
The early 20th century saw the rise of behaviorism, championed by John B. Watson. This perspective focused exclusively on observable behaviors that could be measured and verified, rather than internal mental processes. Watson wanted to discover how behaviors develop and how they could be modified.
Ivan Pavlov's famous experiments with dogs demonstrated classical conditioning, where he trained dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell. He believed he had discovered how all behaviors are learned. Building on this, B.F. Skinner developed operant conditioning, focusing on how punishment and reinforcement shape behavior.
In contrast to behaviorism, the humanistic perspective emerged with Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. Rogers emphasized conscious experiences, free will, and personal choice. Maslow developed his famous hierarchy of needs theory, highlighting psychological growth and self-actualization.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming.
