Nature vs Nurture: Key Points and Discussion

Nature vs. Nurture: What Shapes Who We Are
Nature refers to our genetic makeup—the genes we're born with and other hereditary factors. It's essentially what we inherit biologically from our parents. Heritability measures how much of the variation between people can be attributed to genetic differences. These inherited traits significantly impact personality formation and influence development from childhood through adulthood.
On the flip side, nurture encompasses all the environmental factors affecting human development. This includes how we're raised, our socioeconomic status, early childhood experiences, education, and daily habits. Our environments establish norms—those unspoken rules that guide how society should function.
Peer relationships strongly influence how children behave and develop. According to social learning theory, we learn social behaviors by observing and imitating others around us. This explains why children often mirror the behaviors of their parents, siblings, or friends.
Think About It: Consider your own personality traits. Which ones do you think come from your genetics (nature), and which might be the result of your upbringing and environment (nurture)?
