Early Founding Documents
The Declaration of Independence was crafted by five key figures including Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams, with philosophical influence from John Locke. This document formally announced America's break from British rule.
The Articles of Confederation served as America's first constitution, ratified in 1781 during wartime. Often called a "league of friendship," it created a loose alliance of states rather than a strong central government. This system faced serious problems, including lack of national identity and no taxation power to pay war debts.
The period from 1781-1789 became known as the "critical time period" as the government struggled under the Articles. States printed their own money with little value, and events like Shays' Rebellion demonstrated the weakness of the central government, convincing leaders that change was necessary.

Amending the Constitution
The Constitution includes specific processes for making changes through formal amendments. Amendments can be proposed in two ways: either by two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress or through a national constitutional convention requested by two-thirds of states.
For an amendment to become official, it must be ratified. This happens either when legislatures in three-fourths of states approve it or through special conventions in three-fourths of states. This intentionally difficult process ensures the Constitution isn't changed without significant national consensus.
The government also evolves through informal amendments - practical changes that develop over time without altering the actual text. These include the presidential cabinet system (now with 16 departments), the two-party political system, congressional committees that review legislation, and the power of judicial review.
Remember this: While formal amendments change the actual text of the Constitution, informal amendments change how the government functions in practice without altering the document itself.
Drafting the Constitution
The Constitutional Convention featured competing visions for America's government. The Virginia Plan, championed by Edmund Randolph and James Madison, proposed a completely new government with three branches and a two-house legislature based on population. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Plan from William Paterson aimed to preserve the Articles with modest improvements.
Delegates ultimately decided to create a new government, with George Washington leading the convention. The contentious process required significant compromises. The Great Compromise established two legislative houses - one based on population and one with equal representation for all states - while also strengthening federal power over state power.
Other critical decisions included the notorious Three-Fifths Compromise regarding slave representation, presidential term limits, and establishing impeachment procedures. The Virginia Plan's influence is evident in our current system with its three-branch government, while elements from the New Jersey Plan were incorporated to address smaller states' concerns.
Think about it: The Constitution resulted from intense debate and compromise - no single delegate got everything they wanted, yet together they created a system that has endured for over 230 years!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!!
