Lines and Angles: The Basics
When two lines cross at a single point, they're called intersecting lines. Unlike parallel lines that never meet, intersecting lines always create four angles at their meeting point. The angles formed can be either vertical or adjacent.
Vertical angles sit opposite each other at the intersection and are always congruent (equal). Adjacent angles share both a common side and vertex. When adjacent angles add up to 180°, they form a linear pair and create a straight line - these are called supplementary angles. If they add up to 90°, they're complementary angles.
Parallel lines never intersect and always have the same slope. They must exist in the same plane. Perpendicular lines are a special type of intersecting lines that meet at right angles (90°), and their slopes are opposite reciprocals of each other.
Quick Tip: Remember that when lines intersect, vertical angles are always equal, and adjacent angles along a straight line always add up to 180°.
Transversals and Special Angle Pairs
A transversal is a line that crosses two other lines at different points. When it crosses parallel lines, it creates several important angle pairs with special properties.
Corresponding angles are in the same position at each intersection and are always congruent when the lines are parallel. Same-side interior angles are on the same side of the transversal and inside the parallel lines - they always add up to 180°. Alternate interior angles are inside the parallel lines but on opposite sides of the transversal and are always congruent.
Alternate exterior angles are outside the parallel lines on opposite sides of the transversal and are always congruent. Vertical angles form across from each other at intersection points and are always congruent, while adjacent angles share a common vertex and side.
Remember This: In a diagram with parallel lines cut by a transversal, there are 8 angles but many angle relationships! For example, angle 1 is congruent to angles 4, 5, and 8 for different reasons.
Slopes and Proofs
You can tell if lines are parallel or perpendicular by examining their slopes. Parallel lines always have identical slopes, while perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals of each other .
The key formulas you'll need are:
- Slope = rise/run or /
- Midpoint =
- Distance = √
In geometry proofs, you'll use postulates (statements accepted without proof) and theorems (statements that can be proven) to build logical arguments. The law of syllogism allows you to connect logical statements. Remember that every step in a proof needs justification with a reason or fact.
Pro Tip: Horizontal lines always have a slope of 0, while vertical lines have undefined slopes. This makes them naturally perpendicular to each other!
