Cell Structures and Functions

Your body contains trillions of cells, each one a microscopic factory working 24/7 to keep you alive. Every cell has specific parts called organelles that handle different jobs, just like how your school has different rooms for different subjects.

The cell membrane acts like a bouncer at a club, controlling what gets in and out of the cell. Inside, the nucleus is the control centre containing all your genetic material (DNA) and giving orders to the rest of the cell. Think of it as the headteacher of the cell!

The jelly-like cytoplasm fills the cell and is where most chemical reactions happen - it's basically the cell's workspace. Ribosomes are tiny protein-making machines, while mitochondria are the powerhouses that release energy from glucose through respiration.

Quick Tip: Remember mitochondria as "mighty-chondria" because they're mighty powerful at making energy!

Plant vs Animal Cells

Plant cells have everything animal cells do, plus some exclusive extras that make them special. The cell wall made of cellulose gives plants their rigid structure (which is why trees don't flop about like jellyfish). The large vacuole stores cell sap and helps maintain the plant's shape.

Most importantly, chloroplasts are where photosynthesis happens - they capture light energy to make glucose. This is why plants are green and can make their own food whilst you need to raid the fridge!

Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic Cells

Here's where things get interesting - not all cells are built the same way. Eukaryotic cells (like yours) have a proper nucleus surrounded by a membrane, plus other membrane-bound organelles. It's like having separate, organised rooms in a house.

Prokaryotic cells (bacteria) are much simpler - they're basically one big room with no separate nucleus. Their genetic material just floats freely in the cytoplasm along with ribosomes and other bits. They might have a flagella $whip-like tail$ for swimming about and plasmid DNA for extra genetic tricks.
