Taxonomy is the science of organizing living organisms into logical... Show more

Ever wondered how scientists keep track of millions of different species? They use taxonomy, the science of classifying organisms into organized groups. This system was developed by Linnaeus, who used Greek and Latin names to create a universal language for scientists.
The classification system has several levels, from broadest to most specific: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. When naming organisms, scientists use binomial nomenclature, a two-name system where both names must be italicized or underlined. The Genus is capitalized while the species name remains lowercase.
A species is defined as organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. When two different species breed, the offspring is called a hybrid, like ligers or mules . These hybrids are usually sterile, meaning they can't reproduce.
Did you know? Scientists can abbreviate an organism's scientific name after first mention. For example, Felis leo (lion) can become F. leo, showing they belong to the same genus as F. tigris (tiger).

Life on Earth is divided into six major kingdoms, classified based on cell number, energy acquisition, and cell structure. Let's explore what makes each kingdom unique!
Kingdom Animalia includes multicellular, eukaryotic heterotrophs like birds, mammals, reptiles, and humans. Most animals can move around to find food, unlike plants. This mobility is one of their defining characteristics.
Kingdom Plantae consists of multicellular, eukaryotic autotrophs that make their own food through photosynthesis. Plants cannot move around because of their rigid cell walls. Meanwhile, Kingdom Fungi contains mostly multicellular, eukaryotic heterotrophs that act primarily as decomposers, breaking down dead matter.
Kingdom Protista is diverse, including mostly unicellular organisms that can be either heterotrophs or autotrophs. All protists are eukaryotes (having a nucleus), like amoebas and algae. The final two kingdoms are prokaryotic: Eubacteria (common bacteria like E. coli) and Archaebacteria (ancient bacteria living in extreme environments).
Remember this! Autotrophs make their own food (like plants), while heterotrophs must consume other organisms for energy (like animals and fungi).

Scientists now organize life using the Three Domain System, which groups the six kingdoms into three larger categories based on fundamental cell differences. This system gives us a better picture of evolutionary relationships.
The three domains are: Eukarya (containing plants, animals, fungi, and protists), Bacteria (containing Kingdom Eubacteria), and Archaea (containing ancient bacteria from extreme environments). This system better reflects genetic similarities between organisms.
Scientists also use cladograms to show evolutionary relationships. A cladogram is a branching diagram showing how different groups, called clades, are related. A clade includes a common ancestor and all its descendants, helping us visualize evolutionary history.
To build a cladogram, scientists first create a table comparing characteristics of different organisms (like whether they have fur, claws, or are carnivores). Then they identify derived characters - traits that arose in a common ancestor and were passed to descendants - and use these to establish relationships.
Study tip: When examining a cladogram, the points where lines branch (nodes) represent the common ancestors where new traits first appeared. This helps you understand which characteristics evolved when!

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
