Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space—like solids, liquids, and gases. The most basic unit of matter is the atom, which consists of three key subatomic particles: protons (positive charge in nucleus), neutrons (neutral charge in nucleus), and electrons (negative charge orbiting in shells).
Electrons orbit the nucleus in orbital shells, following the octet rule which states that atoms prefer to have eight electrons in their outer shell. Remember this crucial point: the number of protons determines what element an atom is. In a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons.
The atomic number tells you how many protons an element has, while atomic mass represents the average number of protons and neutrons. When you have the same element with different numbers of neutrons, you have isotopes. When an atom gains or loses electrons, it becomes an ion with a positive or negative charge.
💡 Quick Tip: To find the number of neutrons in an atom, just subtract the atomic number from the rounded atomic mass. For example, if an element has an atomic mass of 23 and an atomic number of 11, it has 12 neutrons!

Two ways to visualize atoms are the Bohr model (showing all orbital shells as rings) and Lewis structures (showing only valence electrons as dots). Lewis structures are simpler but give you the most important information—those outer electrons that participate in bonding!
Chemical bonds come in different types. Hydrogen bonds are forces between molecules where hydrogen is attracted to negatively charged atoms like oxygen or nitrogen. Ionic bonds happen when electrons transfer completely between atoms, creating oppositely charged ions. Covalent bonds form when atoms share electrons.
Polarity refers to the uneven distribution of charge in a molecule. Water is a polar molecule—oxygen has a slight negative charge while hydrogen has a slight positive charge. This explains why water can dissolve salt! The positive hydrogen in water attracts the negative chlorine in salt, while water's negative oxygen attracts the positive sodium.
💡 Understanding Dissolving: Salt dissolves in water because water's polarity pulls apart the ionic bonds holding salt together. The stronger covalent bonds in water molecules remain intact while surrounding the separated sodium and chlorine ions.

When substances mix, we use specific terms: the solute is what gets dissolved (like salt), the solvent is what does the dissolving (often water), and the solution is the final mixture where everything is evenly distributed.
Water's polarity explains many everyday phenomena! When you rub a balloon on your hair, the balloon becomes negatively charged. If you bring this balloon near a stream of water, the water bends toward it because water's positive hydrogen atoms are attracted to the balloon's negative charge.
The periodic table organizes elements in a meaningful way. The horizontal rows are called periods and tell you how many orbital shells an element has. The vertical columns, called groups or families, tell you how many valence electrons an element has. For example, all elements in Group 1A (alkali metals) have one valence electron, while Group 8A elements (noble gases) have eight.
💡 Periodic Table Hack: You can quickly determine an element's properties by its position! An element in period 3, group 2A (like magnesium) has 3 orbital shells and 2 valence electrons.

The number of valence electrons determines how many bonds an element can form. For example, sulfur has 6 valence electrons, so it needs 2 more to satisfy the octet rule. This means it can form 2 bonds with other elements that have complementary electron needs.
Elements with many orbital shells but few valence electrons (like sodium) are highly reactive because they easily give away electrons. This happens because their outer electrons are far from the nucleus and less tightly held. Conversely, elements with few orbital shells but many valence electrons (like fluorine) are reactive because they strongly attract additional electrons.
The pH scale measures how acidic or basic (alkaline) a solution is, based on the concentration of hydrogen ions . The scale ranges from 0-14, with 7 being neutral. Lower numbers indicate acids , while higher numbers indicate bases . Each step on the scale represents a 10-fold change in acidity or alkalinity!
💡 pH Perspective: If a solution changes from pH 5 to pH 4, it becomes 10 times more acidic! This logarithmic scale helps us understand why small pH changes can have big effects in chemistry and biology.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
