Layers of the Earth's Surface

Ever wondered what's beneath your feet? The crust is Earth's outermost layer where we live. Though it's the thinnest layer, it contains all the rocks and minerals we interact with daily. Scientists haven't even drilled past this layer yet!

The crust comes in two varieties: continental crust (made of andesite and granite) and oceanic crust (composed of basalt and gabbro). These different compositions explain why continents and ocean floors have different properties.

The lithosphere includes the crust plus the uppermost solid portion of the mantle below it. Think of it as Earth's "shell" that's broken into tectonic plates. These plates float on the asthenosphere, a partially molten, slushy layer at the top of the mantle that allows plate movement.

Did you know? The mantle is actually Earth's thickest layer! It provides the convection currents that move the surface plates, similar to how boiling water circulates in a pot.

Earth's Interior Dynamics

The mantle's convection currents are like Earth's engine. When the lower mantle gets heated by the core, it creates massive circulation patterns that drive the movement of the lithosphere above. This is what powers plate tectonics and causes continents to drift!

At Earth's center lies the core, made primarily of nickel and iron (sometimes called NiFe). The core is split into two distinct parts, each with unique properties that affect our planet.

The outer core is liquid and generates Earth's magnetic field as it flows around the inner core. This magnetic field protects us from harmful solar radiation. Interestingly, this field can actually reverse its orientation over long time periods.

The inner core is solid despite being hotter than the outer core (due to immense pressure). It rotates at its own speed, slightly faster than the rest of the planet!

Fascinating fact: The movement in Earth's outer core is so important that without it, our planet would lose its magnetic shield that protects all life from space radiation.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
