Biology Lab Safety Essentials
Every biology lab requires specific safety equipment including safety goggles, gloves, fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, and fume hoods. Before starting any experiment, make sure you know where these items are located and how to use them.
Always follow basic safety rules in the lab. Read instructions thoroughly before beginning work and never perform unauthorized experiments. Keep your area clutter-free, wear appropriate clothing closed−toeshoes, protectiveapron, and tie back long hair. Remember to remove contact lenses and wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.
Safety Tip: Take lab work seriously! Avoid joking around or horsing around in the lab - a moment of distraction can lead to accidents.
When handling chemicals, always check labels twice and refer to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for safety information. Never return unused chemicals to original containers, and remember the important rule: add acids to water, never the opposite. After completing your work, clean your area thoroughly and dispose of materials properly.
Know how to respond to accidents. For chemical spills, neutralize acids with baking soda and bases with vinegar. If chemicals contact your skin, use the safety shower immediately and flush with water. For eye exposure, flush for at least 20 minutes using an eyewash station. In case of ingestion, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. For burns, cool under running water, and for serious emergencies like uncontrollable fires, call 911.
