The Anatomy of the Skull

The human skull consists of several major bones that work together to protect your brain and support facial structures. Key bones include the frontal (forehead), parietal (top/sides), occipital (back), temporal (sides), and sphenoid bones. The face is formed by the maxilla (upper jaw), mandible (lower jaw), zygomatic (cheekbone), nasal, and lacrimal bones, along with the ethmoid bone that separates the nasal cavity from the brain.

When examining skull anatomy, you'll encounter three important structural features. Articulations occur where two bones join together, creating connections that may allow movement or provide stability. Projections are areas that extend outward from the bone's surface, often serving as attachment points for muscles and ligaments. Holes or openings in the skull allow blood vessels and nerves to pass through.

Some key structures include the occipital condyle, an articulation point that connects your skull to your spine, creating a hinge joint that lets you nod your head up and down. The styloid process is a needle-like projection that anchors muscles involved in tongue, throat, and voice box movements. The zygomatic process forms part of your cheekbone and helps protect your eye while giving your face its characteristic shape.

Fun Fact: The foramen magnum is a large opening at the base of your skull where your spinal cord connects to your brain. Its name literally means "great hole" in Latin!
