Ever wondered how to deal with parts of a whole,... Show more

Think about eating 2 slices from an 8-slice pizza โ you've just experienced a fraction! A fraction represents part of something that's been divided into equal pieces.
Fractions have two main parts: the numerator (top number) shows how many parts you have, while the denominator (bottom number) shows the total number of equal parts. So 2/8 means you have 2 parts out of 8 total parts.
There are three types of fractions you'll encounter. Proper fractions have smaller numerators than denominators . Improper fractions have larger numerators . Mixed numbers combine whole numbers with fractions .
Quick Tip: Remember that all parts in a fraction must be equal in size โ you can't have one huge pizza slice and seven tiny ones!

Adding fractions is actually pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it! When fractions have the same denominator, just add the numerators and keep the denominator unchanged. For example: 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8.
Things get trickier with different denominators. You'll need to find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of the denominators first. Then convert both fractions to have this common denominator before adding. Like adding 2/5 + 3/4: find LCM of 20, convert to 8/20 + 15/20 = 23/20.
Subtracting fractions follows the exact same rules as addition โ just subtract instead of add! Multiplying is actually easier: multiply numerator ร numerator and denominator ร denominator. For division, flip the second fraction upside down and multiply instead.
Remember: Converting fractions to have common denominators is like making sure you're comparing apples to apples!

A ratio compares two quantities by division and shows their relationship. You can write ratios using colons (3:5), fractions (3/5), or words ("3 to 5"). The first number is the antecedent, and the second is the consequent.
Proportions occur when two ratios are equal, like 3:5 :: 15:25. This creates a powerful tool for solving problems because the product of extremes equals the product of means. In other words, if a:b :: c:d, then a ร d = b ร c.
Understanding the difference helps in real situations. Ratios compare quantities (like comparing test scores), while proportions help solve for unknown values (like figuring out ingredient amounts when doubling a recipe).
Pro Tip: Use the cross-multiplication rule to quickly check if two ratios form a proportion!

Commercial math is all about the math you actually use in everyday life! Whether you're calculating the best deal at a store, figuring out tips, or managing your allowance, these skills are super practical.
Think about real scenarios: your friend needs to find the cost of one notebook when 12 cost โฑ200, or you want to compare a 25% discount versus a free gift offer. These situations require understanding percentages, unitary method, and profit and loss concepts.
Key topics in commercial math include money management, calculating simple and compound interest, understanding discounts and taxes, and analyzing profit and loss. These aren't just school subjects โ they're life skills that'll help you make smart financial decisions.
Real Talk: Mastering these concepts now means you'll never get ripped off during shopping or confused about loan calculations later!

Money is the foundation of commercial math โ understanding denominations and making change are basic but essential skills. Whether dealing with dollars, rupees, or pesos, the principles remain the same.
Percentages represent parts out of 100 and are everywhere in daily life! When you see "30% off" or "scored 85%," you're dealing with percentages. To calculate: 30% of 750 = (30/100) ร 750 = 225. The symbol % literally means "out of 100."
The unitary method helps find "per unit value" โ super useful for comparing prices or calculating quantities. If 4 lemons cost 5, so 10 lemons cost $50. First find the unit value, then multiply for your answer.
Money Smart: Always use the unitary method to compare prices โ it reveals the best deals instantly!

Profit and loss drive business decisions everywhere! Profit happens when selling price > cost price, while loss occurs when cost price > selling price. These simple formulas help determine if a business deal is worth it.
Simple interest is straightforward: SI = (P ร R ร T)/100, where P is principal, R is rate, and T is time. If you lend โฑ1000 at 10% for 2 years, you'll earn โฑ200 interest. Banks often use this for basic calculations.
Compound interest is more complex but powerful โ you earn interest on your interest! The formula CI = P^T - P shows how money grows exponentially over time. This is why starting to save early makes such a huge difference.
Financial Wisdom: Compound interest is your best friend when saving, but your worst enemy when borrowing!

Discounts reduce prices and are calculated as: Discount = Marked Price - Selling Price. The discount percentage = ร 100. Understanding this helps you evaluate whether "50% off" is really better than "buy one, get one free."
Taxes are fees the government adds to purchases for public welfare. If chocolates cost โฑ50 with 10% service tax, your total bill becomes โฑ50 + โฑ5 = โฑ55. Always factor taxes into your budget planning.
These calculations help you become a smarter consumer. You'll know the true cost of purchases and can compare deals accurately. Whether it's GST, income tax, or service tax, the mathematical principles stay consistent.
Shopping Hack: Always calculate the final price including taxes before deciding if a deal is worth it!

Data handling is about collecting, organizing, and presenting information to make smart decisions. Everything around you generates data โ from test scores to weather patterns to social media likes.
Bar graphs use rectangular bars to compare different categories, making it easy to see which values are larger or smaller. Line graphs show changes over time, perfect for tracking trends like your grades throughout the semester.
Pictographs use pictures and symbols to represent data โ they're simple but effective for showing information visually. Think of them as the emoji version of data presentation!
Data Detective: The right graph type makes complex information instantly understandable โ choose wisely!

Pie charts show how parts make up a whole using circular sectors โ perfect for displaying percentages or proportions. If 360 students were surveyed about favorite fruits, each degree represents one student's preference.
Scatter plots reveal relationships between two variables by plotting points and drawing trend lines. They're great for seeing if there's a connection between things like study time and test scores.
Each graph type serves different purposes. Use bar graphs for comparing categories, line graphs for trends over time, pie charts for showing parts of a whole, and scatter plots for finding relationships between variables.
Visualization Power: The right graph can reveal patterns that aren't obvious in raw numbers โ data becomes your superpower!

Understanding gross vs net income is crucial for financial literacy. Gross income is your total earnings before any deductions โ salary, allowances, bonuses, everything combined.
Net income is what you actually take home after taxes, insurance, and other deductions are removed. If you earn โฑ6,500 gross but pay โฑ1,000 in taxes and deductions, your net income is โฑ5,500.
For companies, gross income = Revenue - Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). This shows profit before operating expenses. Understanding both personal and business income calculations helps you make informed financial decisions.
Reality Check: Always budget based on net income, not gross โ that's the money you actually have to spend!
