Payroll and Compensation: Gross and Net Pay Computation
Learn to calculate gross pay, deductions, and net pay for
employees
What you'll lear

Course Overview

Getting your head around payroll computation is basically learning how to decode the journey from what you earn to what actually lands in your bank account. In the Philippines, this process involves multiple steps including calculating gross pay, subtracting mandatory contributions, and applying the correct tax rates.

The whole system might seem complicated at first, but it follows a straightforward pattern. You'll master different compensation methods, understand government deductions like SSS and PhilHealth, and learn to apply withholding tax rates accurately.

This knowledge isn't just academic - it's practical stuff you'll use throughout your working life. Whether you're checking your own pay slip or planning a career in business, these skills are absolutely essential.

Quick Tip: The basic formula is simple: Net Pay = Gross Pay - Total Deductions. Everything else is just learning how to calculate each part!

What you'll lear

Understanding Payroll Fundamentals

Gross pay is the total amount you earn before anyone takes a single peso out - this includes your basic salary, overtime, allowances, and bonuses. Think of it as your "before" picture in payroll terms.

Net pay is what actually hits your account after all the deductions have been subtracted. This is your "after" picture - the money you can actually spend.

Deductions are the amounts taken from your gross pay, including mandatory government contributions SSS,PhilHealth,PagIBIGSSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, taxes, and any voluntary deductions you've agreed to.

The Philippines has several compensation structures. Salaried employees get a fixed monthly amount, hourly workers are paid per hour worked, commission-based employees earn percentages of sales, and piece-rate workers get paid per unit they produce. Each method affects how your gross pay gets calculated.

Reality Check: Understanding these basics now will save you from confusion when you get your first proper job - no more staring at pay slips wondering where your money went!

Computing Gross Pay for Monthly Employees

Calculating gross pay for salaried employees starts with your basic monthly salary, then adds overtime, allowances, and bonuses. The tricky bit is getting the overtime calculations right.

Here's how it works: Maria earns ₱25,000 monthly, worked 8 overtime hours, and gets ₱2,000 transport allowance. First, find her hourly rate: ₱25,000 ÷ (22 days × 8 hours) = ₱142.05 per hour. Her overtime pay becomes 8 hours × ₱142.05 × 1.5 = ₱1,704.60.

Her total gross pay: ₱25,000 + ₱1,704.60 + ₱2,000 = ₱28,704.60. Notice how overtime gets paid at time-and-a-half (1.5 times the regular rate).

For daily wage earners, multiply the daily rate by days worked, then add overtime. Juan earning ₱537 daily (Metro Manila minimum) for 22 days gets ₱11,814 regular pay, plus 6 overtime hours at ₱67.13 × 1.25 = ₱503.48 extra.

Money Matters: Overtime rates vary - regular overtime is 1.25x your hourly rate, while work on rest days or holidays can be double time. Know your rates!

Mandatory Government Contributions

Every Filipino employee must contribute to three government programs, and understanding these mandatory deductions helps you plan your finances better. These aren't optional - they're required by law.

SSS contributions are based on salary brackets, with a total rate of 14% split between you (4.5%) and your employer (9.5%). For someone earning ₱25,000 monthly, that's ₱1,125 from your pay. The maximum salary credit is ₱30,000, so high earners don't pay SSS on their entire salary.

PhilHealth contributions are simpler - 5% of your basic salary split equally with your employer, so you pay 2.5%. On ₱25,000, that's ₱625 monthly. This covers your health insurance needs.

Pag-IBIG contributions are just 1% of your monthly compensation (matched by your employer), but there's a cap. Your maximum contribution is only ₱100 monthly, even if you earn millions.

Future Planning: These contributions aren't just deductions - they're investments in your future. SSS provides pensions, PhilHealth covers medical expenses, and Pag-IBIG helps with housing loans!

What you'll lear

Withholding Tax Computation

The withholding tax system in the Philippines uses progressive rates, meaning higher earners pay higher percentages. Thanks to the TRAIN Law, the first ₱250,000 annually is completely tax-free.

The tax brackets work like steps: 0% up to ₱250,000, then 15% on income from ₱250,001 to ₱400,000, 20% on ₱400,001 to ₱800,000, and so on. You don't pay the higher rate on your entire income - just the portion that falls in each bracket.

To calculate your monthly tax, first find your taxable compensation by subtracting SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG from gross pay. Then multiply by 12 to get the annual equivalent and apply the appropriate tax rate.

For Maria's ₱26,704.60 monthly taxable income (₱320,455.20 annually), she falls in the 15% bracket. Her annual tax is (₱320,455.20 - ₱250,000) × 15% = ₱10,568.28, which equals ₱880.69 monthly.

Tax Smart: The BIR provides monthly tax tables that make this calculation much easier - most companies use these instead of manual calculations!

Complete Payroll Example

Let's work through a comprehensive payroll calculation for Ana, a marketing manager earning ₱45,000 monthly with 12 overtime hours and ₱3,000 meal allowance.

Step 1 - Gross Pay: Basic salary (₱45,000) + overtime pay 12hours×255.68×1.25=3,835.2012 hours × ₱255.68 × 1.25 = ₱3,835.20 + meal allowance (₱3,000) = ₱51,835.20 gross pay.

Step 2 - Contributions: SSS (₱2,025), PhilHealth (₱1,125), and Pag-IBIG 100rememberthecap!₱100 - remember the cap! total ₱3,250 in mandatory deductions.

Step 3 - Withholding Tax: Taxable income is ₱51,835.20 - ₱3,250 = ₱48,585.20 monthly, or ₱583,022.40 annually. This falls in the 20% bracket, resulting in ₱4,925.37 monthly tax.

Step 4 - Net Pay: ₱51,835.20 - ₱3,250 - ₱4,925.37 = ₱43,659.83 net pay. That's what actually goes into Ana's bank account each month.

Reality Check: Notice how Ana's net pay (₱43,659.83) is about 84% of her gross pay (₱51,835.20) - this percentage is typical for middle-income earners in the Philippines!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades

Not only did it help me find the answer but it also showed me alternative ways to solve it. I was horrible in math and science but now I have an a in both subjects. Thanks for the help🤍🤍

The app's just great! All I have to do is enter the topic in the search bar and I get the response real fast. I don't have to watch 10 YouTube videos to understand something, so I'm saving my time. Highly recommended!

In school I was really bad at maths but thanks to the app, I am doing better now. I am so grateful that you made the app.

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend

Best app if you're in Highschool or Junior high. I have been using this app for 2 school years and it's the best, it's good if you don't have anyone to help you with school work.😋🩷🎀

This app is phenomenal down to the correct info and the various topics you can study! I greatly recommend it for people who struggle with procrastination and those who need homework help. It has been perfectly accurate for world 1 history as far as I’ve seen! Geometry too!
