Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures
Matter can be broken down into two main categories: pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances have a fixed composition that doesn't vary, while mixtures can have different proportions of substances.
An element contains just one type of atom from the periodic table. Elements are written as either a single capital letter (like O for oxygen) or a capital letter followed by lowercase letters (like Na for sodium). Some elements exist in diatomic form, meaning their atoms naturally bond with themselves. Elements can only be broken down through nuclear reactions.
Compounds contain two or more different types of atoms bonded together in specific ratios. Water (H₂O) and table salt (NaCl) are perfect examples of compounds. They always have multiple capital letters in their chemical formulas and can only be broken down through chemical reactions.
💡 Think of compounds like recipes - they always need the exact same ingredients (atoms) in the exact same proportions every time!
Mixtures contain two or more substances that aren't chemically bonded together. Their compositions can vary, and they can be separated using physical methods. Mixtures come in two types: homogeneous mixtures (uniform throughout, also called solutions) with solutes dissolved in solvents, and heterogeneous mixtures (not uniform, with visible different components).
Separating Mixtures
Since mixtures aren't chemically bonded, we can separate them using different physical methods based on the mixture type.
Filtration is used to separate solid-liquid mixtures. This process works by passing the mixture through a filter that catches the solid particles while allowing the liquid to flow through. This method is perfect for situations like separating sand from water.
Distillation helps separate liquid mixtures where the components have different boiling points. When heated, the liquid with the lower boiling point evaporates first, then condenses back to liquid form and is collected separately. This technique is commonly used to purify water or create concentrated substances.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming.
