Matter and Its Properties

Matter can be either a pure substance or a mixture of substances. Pure substances (elements or compounds) have constant composition and properties throughout any sample. When substances are mixed, we get mixtures that can be either homogeneous (uniform throughout) or heterogeneous (not uniform).

Properties of matter help us identify and separate mixtures. Physical properties like density, particle size, and boiling point allow for separation methods including evaporation, filtration, distillation, and chromatography.

Elements exist in different physical states at room temperature. Bromine and mercury are the only liquid elements, while noble gases and several others (nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, hydrogen, chlorine) exist as gases. Most elements are solids. Some elements naturally exist as diatomic molecules (BrINClHOF).

Science Hack: Remember the elements that exist as diatomic molecules with the mnemonic "BrINClHOF" (bromine, iodine, nitrogen, chlorine, hydrogen, oxygen, fluorine)!

Atomic Concepts

The atom has evolved through different models over time. Dalton's model proposed that elements are made of identical atoms that combine to form compounds. Rutherford's experiment revealed atoms are mostly empty space with a small, dense nucleus. The Bohr model placed electrons in circular orbits, while the modern Wave-Mechanical model describes electrons moving in an "electron cloud."

The nucleus contains protons (positive charge) and neutrons (no charge), while electrons (negative charge) surround it. Protons and neutrons have a mass of 1 atomic mass unit (amu), but electrons have almost no mass. The number of protons equals the number of electrons in a neutral atom.

Isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. When atoms gain electrons, they become negative ions and their radius increases. When they lose electrons, they become positive ions and their radius decreases.

Remember: The atomic number (number of protons) determines which element an atom is, while the mass number protons+neutronsprotons + neutrons tells you how heavy it is!

The Periodic Table

The periodic table organizes elements by atomic number and chemical properties. Metals are shiny, malleable, good conductors with low ionization energies. Non-metals are generally brittle, poor conductors with high ionization energies. Noble gases are extremely unreactive due to their stable electron configurations.

Elements in the same group (column) have similar properties. Group 1 elements (except hydrogen) are alkali metals, Group 2 are alkaline earth metals, and Group 17 contains the halogens. Elements in the same period (row) have the same number of occupied energy levels.

As you move down a group, atomic radius increases while electronegativity decreases. Moving across a period, atomic radius decreases while electronegativity increases. Some elements can exist as allotropes - different forms of the same element in the same phase, with different structures and properties.

Cool Fact: Carbon has multiple allotropes including diamond, graphite, and fullerenes (like "buckyballs"), each with dramatically different properties despite being the same element!

Chemical Formulas and Equations

Compounds are substances made of two or more different elements chemically combined in fixed proportions. They can only be broken down by chemical means. Chemical formulas show the composition of compounds in different ways.

Empirical formulas show elements in their simplest whole-number ratio. Molecular formulas show the actual number of atoms per element in a single molecule. Structural formulas go further by showing the physical arrangement of atoms in the molecule.

A balanced chemical equation represents the conservation of atoms in a chemical reaction. This means the number of atoms of each element must be the same on both sides of the equation.

Study Tip: When balancing equations, count atoms of each element on both sides and adjust coefficients (not subscripts!) until they match. The coefficients represent the number of molecules or formula units.

Chemical Bonding

Chemical compounds form when atoms bond together. Breaking bonds requires energy (endothermic), while forming bonds releases energy (exothermic). Compounds have less potential energy than their individual atoms.

There are three main types of bonds: Ionic bonds form between metals and non-metals through electron transfer. Covalent bonds form between two non-metals through electron sharing. Metallic bonds involve electrons moving freely among positively charged metal ions.

Bond polarity depends on the difference in electronegativity (EN) between atoms. Non-polar bonds have an EN difference of 0. Polar covalent bonds range from 0.0-1.7, while ionic bonds have EN differences greater than 1.7. Polar molecules have an uneven electron distribution with positive and negative ends (like water).

Real-World Connection: The polarity of water explains why "like dissolves like" - polar substances (like salt) dissolve in water, while non-polar substances (like oil) don't mix with water but dissolve in other non-polar liquids!

Intermolecular Forces

Intermolecular forces (IMF) allow different particles to attract each other, forming solids and liquids. These forces are weaker than chemical bonds but crucial for determining physical properties.

Hydrogen bonds are particularly strong IMFs that form between polar molecules containing hydrogen bonded to nitrogen, oxygen, or fluorine. These bonds give water its unique properties like high boiling point and surface tension.

Non-polar molecules rely on weaker forces of attraction, resulting in lower melting points and higher vapor pressure. This explains why substances like oxygen or methane become gases at much lower temperatures than water.

Think About It: Without hydrogen bonding, water would be a gas at room temperature - and life as we know it wouldn't be possible!

Energy, Heat, and Temperature

Energy exists in many forms including chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal energy. Potential energy is stored energy, while kinetic energy is energy of motion. According to the Law of Conservation of Energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.

Heat is energy transferred from a higher temperature body to a lower temperature one. Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of particles in a sample - not the total energy. Temperature doesn't depend on sample size, while heat does.

Phase changes occur when matter changes from one state to another. These include fusion (solid to liquid), vaporization (liquid to gas), condensation (gas to liquid), solidification (liquid to solid), sublimation (solid to gas), and deposition (gas to solid). Exothermic processes release heat, making surroundings warmer, while endothermic processes absorb heat, cooling surroundings.

Everyday Application: When sweat evaporates from your skin, it's an endothermic process that absorbs heat from your body, helping you cool down on hot days!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️
