Understanding Poverty and Inequality
You've probably seen homelessness in Dublin or heard about families struggling with bills - these are real examples of poverty happening in modern Ireland. Poverty means not having enough money for basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter. Inequality is the unfair gap between rich and poor people in society.
There are several key types you need to know. Absolute poverty is the most extreme - when someone literally can't survive because they lack food, clean water, or shelter. Relative poverty happens when someone's income is much lower than average in their country, so they can't afford a "normal" lifestyle.
Ireland uses a special term called consistent poverty. This means someone lives in relative poverty AND can't afford basics like heating their home or a proper meal every day. Social exclusion occurs when people get pushed to society's edges and can't fully participate due to poverty or discrimination.
