What Makes a Mineral?
Not everything in the earth is a mineral! To qualify as a mineral, a substance must meet five specific criteria.
First, minerals must be naturally occurring - they form through natural processes, not in a lab. They must also be solid substances at normal Earth temperatures and pressures.
Minerals have an orderly crystalline structure, meaning their atoms arrange in regular, repeating patterns. They also have a definite chemical composition that can be written as a formula. Finally, minerals are generally considered inorganic, although some exceptions exist.
Quick Check: Is ice a mineral? Yes! When water freezes naturally, it forms a crystalline solid with a definite chemical composition (H₂O).
