Earth's Four Subsystems
Ever wonder how our planet works as a complete system? Earth functions through four main subsystems that work together like parts of a machine. The first of these is the atmosphere—the invisible layer of gases surrounding our planet.
The atmosphere is mainly composed of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%), creating the perfect mix for life to thrive. Both plants and animals depend on these gases to survive through processes like photosynthesis and respiration.
Beyond just providing air to breathe, the atmosphere acts like Earth's thermostat. It works as both a blanket and a filter, trapping heat at night to keep us warm while blocking harmful radiation during the day.
Quick Fact: The atmosphere is the reason Earth doesn't experience the extreme temperature swings that happen on planets without atmospheres—where it might be hundreds of degrees during the day and freezing at night!
The Other Three Subsystems
The biosphere is where all living things exist—from the deepest sea creatures to birds soaring through the sky. Think of it as Earth's thin "life layer" that wraps around the planet's surface. It's essentially one giant ecosystem where all organisms interact with each other and their environment.
Beneath our feet lies the geosphere, the solid part of Earth that makes up the entire planet's structure. This includes everything from the inner core at Earth's center to the outer crust where we live. The geosphere provides the physical foundation for all other systems.
The hydrosphere encompasses all of Earth's water—oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwater, and even water vapor. Oceans dominate this system, covering 71% of Earth's surface and containing a whopping 97.5% of all water on the planet.
Remember This: All four subsystems constantly interact and depend on each other. A change in one system (like pollution in the atmosphere) eventually affects all the others!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades
