Literary Genres Explained

Stories come in many flavors! Drama forms the foundation of many genres - it's a serious story that focuses on characters and explores moral themes. When drama gets over-the-top emotional, it becomes melodrama.

Some genres are variations of drama with specific elements. Mystery keeps part of the plot hidden until the end, while romance centers on characters falling in love. Fantasy introduces magical or unreal elements without explaining them, whereas science fiction creates unreal scenarios but explains them with made-up science (think time travel, future settings, or outer space adventures).

When a story aims to frighten you, it's horror, often using gore and violence. Gothic stories are similar but feature mysterious elements and isolated settings with a moody, atmospheric vibe. Breaking away from drama, comedy has a looser structure with the main goal of making you laugh (including dark comedy that finds humor in grim situations).

Folklore represents stories passed down by word of mouth across generations. This category includes fairytales featuring magical beings, tall tales/folktales about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, fables that use animals to teach lessons, and legends based on real people whose stories became exaggerated over time.
