Chapter 2: Revolution and New Order
Following Old Major's death, Napoleon, Snowball, and Squealer emerge as the new leaders, developing the philosophy of Animalism into seven clear commandments. The rebellion against Mr. Jones succeeds, and Manor Farm is renamed Animal Farm.
Vocabulary: Animalism - The political philosophy developed by the pigs, based on Old Major's teachings.
The Seven Commandments become the foundation of their new society:
- Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy
- Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend
- No animal shall wear clothes
- No animal shall sleep in a bed
- No animal shall drink alcohol
- No animal shall kill another animal
- All animals are equal
Highlight: The placement of the gun from the farmhouse at the foot of the flagpole symbolizes their successful revolution against human authority.
Example: The pigs' manipulation becomes evident as they use their literacy and intelligence to interpret Animalism for other animals, establishing their dominance through intellectual superiority.
