Welcome to your English 8 first quarter review! This guide... Show more

You're diving into English 8 content that's designed to level up your reading, writing, and communication skills. This quarter focuses on understanding how stories work, mastering grammar rules, exploring journalism, and learning special language techniques.
The topics you'll cover build on each other - from analyzing stories to writing them, from understanding grammar to using it in real journalism. These skills aren't just for English class; they'll help you in every subject and in real life too!
Pro Tip: Don't try to memorize everything at once. Focus on understanding the concepts first, then practice applying them in your own writing.

Every story you've ever loved has five key narrative elements that work together like ingredients in your favorite recipe. Understanding these will help you analyze stories better and write your own amazing tales.
Characters are the heart of any story. The protagonist is your main character (the "good guy"), while the antagonist creates conflict (the "villain"). Some characters change throughout the story (dynamic characters), while others stay the same (static characters). Authors reveal character personalities through direct characterization (telling you straight up) or indirect characterization (showing through STEAL: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, and Looks).
Setting paints the picture of when and where your story happens. Good writers use all five senses to make you feel like you're actually there - you can smell the ocean, hear the waves, and taste the salt in the air.
The plot is your story's roadmap, moving from exposition (beginning) through conflict and rising action to the climax (turning point), then falling action to resolution (ending). The theme is the story's deeper message, while point of view determines who's telling the tale.
Remember: Every movie, book, or even TikTok story uses these same five elements!

Subject-verb agreement might sound complicated, but it's actually simple: singular subjects need singular verbs, and plural subjects need plural verbs. Think of it like matching your shoes - they need to go together!
The tricky part comes when phrases sneak between your subject and verb. Here's the secret: ignore the interrupting words. In "The decision of the legislators is upsetting," the subject is "decision" (singular), not "legislators," so you use "is."
Compound subjects joined by "and" usually take plural verbs, like "A lantern and a candle are on the porch." But when you use "either-or" or "neither-nor," the verb matches whichever subject is closest to it.
Collective nouns (like "team" or "family") can be tricky. If the group acts as one unit, use a singular verb. If they're acting as individuals, use a plural verb. Money, measurements, and titles are almost always singular, even if they sound plural.
Quick Check: Cover the middle of long sentences with your hand to find the real subject and verb!

Journalism comes from the Latin word "diurnal," meaning daily events. It's basically storytelling about real things that happened - stuff people need to know but might not have heard about yet.
Modern journalism covers four main channels: audio (radio, podcasts), audio-visual (TV, video), print (newspapers, magazines), and online journalism (websites, social media). There's also citizen journalism, where regular people report news through their phones and social media.
Campus papers serve two major purposes: helping students learn writing and reading skills while keeping the school community informed. They have information functions (sharing facts) and opinion functions (expressing viewpoints).
A typical campus paper has four main sections: the front page (local and foreign news), editorial page (opinions and commentary), sports page (athletic news and features), and special features (entertainment, lifestyle content). Each section has specific parts like headlines, bylines, and cutlines that help organize information.
Fun Fact: Your school paper uses the same basic structure as major newspapers like the Philippine Daily Inquirer!

Idioms are phrases that don't mean exactly what they literally say - they have hidden meanings that you just have to learn. Think of them as inside jokes that everyone in the language shares.
"The ball is in your court" doesn't mean you're playing tennis; it means the decision is yours to make. "It's a piece of cake" isn't about dessert; it means something is super easy to do.
These expressions make English colorful and fun, but they can be confusing if you're not familiar with them. "Let the cat out of the bag" means revealing a secret, while "pulling your leg" means someone's joking with you.
Understanding idioms helps you sound more natural when speaking English and helps you better understand movies, songs, and conversations. Plus, they make your writing more interesting and relatable.
Practice Tip: Try using one new idiom each week in your conversations - just make sure you know what it means first!

Transitions are like bridges that connect your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. Without them, your writing feels choppy and disconnected, like jumping from rock to rock across a river.
You can place transitions between sections (in longer works), between paragraphs (to show how ideas connect), or within paragraphs (to guide readers through your thoughts). They can be single words, phrases, or entire sentences.
Different types of transitions serve different purposes. Use addition transitions (furthermore, moreover) to build on ideas. Comparison transitions (however, on the other hand) show differences. Time transitions (first, then, finally) organize events chronologically.
Proof transitions (because, in fact) support your arguments, while emphasis transitions (obviously, definitely) highlight important points. Example transitions (for instance, to illustrate) introduce supporting details, and conclusion transitions (therefore, in summary) wrap up your thoughts.
Writing Hack: Read your draft out loud - if it sounds choppy, you probably need more transitions!

Modal verbs are special helper verbs that express ability, possibility, permission, or obligation. They're like the Swiss Army knife of English grammar - small but incredibly useful tools.
For ability, use "can" for present situations ("I can swim") and "could" for past abilities ("I could ride a bike when I was five"). These same words also express possibility - "You can catch the 6 AM train" or "You may go out for lunch."
Permission uses "can," "could," "may," and "might." "May I use the bathroom?" sounds more formal than "Can I use the bathroom?" Obligation typically uses "must," "should," or "have to," depending on how strong the requirement is.
The key is matching the modal verb to your intended meaning and the formality of the situation. "Might" suggests less certainty than "will," while "must" shows stronger obligation than "should."
Remember: Modal verbs never change form - no adding -s, -ed, or -ing to them!

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
