Introduction to Prose
Prose comes from the Latin "prosa oratio" which means straightforward language that follows the natural flow of speech. Unlike poetry, prose doesn't have strict rhythmic patterns or rhyme schemes.
When you read novels, short stories, essays, or even your textbooks, you're reading prose. It's the standard format for most written communication we encounter daily.
Fun fact: The word "prose" has been used to describe straightforward writing since the 14th century!
Features of Prose
Prose is organized into sentences and paragraphs rather than lines and stanzas. It focuses on communicating ideas clearly instead of creating rhythmic patterns.
Unlike poetry, prose doesn't prioritize aesthetic appeal through meter or rhyme. It uses complete grammatical sentences that flow together to form paragraphs.
The natural, conversational quality of prose makes it perfect for telling stories, sharing information, or explaining complex ideas in an accessible way.
Types of Prose
Prose comes in several different types that serve various purposes:
Non-fictional prose is based mainly on fact, even if it contains some fictional elements. Essays, biographies, memoirs, and news articles all fall into this category.
Fictional prose includes stories created from imagination, like novels and short stories. Heroic prose tells epic tales of heroes, while prose poetry combines elements of both prose and poetry.
Remember: Each type of prose has its own special purpose and style, but they all use natural language organized into paragraphs!
Novel Features
Novels are longer fictional prose works with several key elements. They're divided into chapters and feature complex characterization that brings people to life through description and action.
Dialogue shows conversation between characters, while point of view determines who's telling the story. Every novel has a central theme or message, along with a setting that establishes where and when the story takes place.
The plot is the sequence of events that make up the story, giving it structure and direction. Understanding these elements helps you better analyze and enjoy the novels you read.
Plot Structures
Stories don't always unfold in the same way. There are three main ways authors structure their plots:
Linear plots tell the story in chronological order from beginning to end. This straightforward approach makes events easy to follow.
Flashback structures jump back in time to show events that happened earlier. These past scenes help explain current situations or character motivations.
In medias res (Latin for "in the middle of things") starts the story in the middle of the action, then fills in background information later. This grabs your attention right away!
Try this: Next time you read a story, identify which plot structure it uses and think about why the author might have made that choice!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming.
