 Appeals to the reader’s physical senses 

 Extreme exaggeration of a real event or situation 

 hints that what will happen next; used to build suspense in the story, when you want to hint about something that might happen, without being too obvious 

 when a narrator is mentally transported to an event that happened in the past

 refers to something indirectly, or to describe something in more pleasant or polite way; used to add in some humor, or when you want to soften the blow, or use less harsh imagery or phrasing 

 specific choice of words used helps determine the style in which the person is speaking or writing 

 words at the same sound or letters appear in a sentence, often consecutively 

 Indirectly refers to external people, events, or things, such as in the real world, or in another story; 

 suggestion or call directions to indirectly, or to hint at
