Agora Cyber Charter School Middle School Reading Lists

Get ready to explore amazing worlds through books! Agora Cyber Charter School has put together reading lists for all middle school students in grades 6-8. These lists include books at different reading levels so you can find stories that both interest and challenge you.

Reading these books will help you develop important skills like critical thinking, vocabulary, and understanding different perspectives. Each grade has its own special collection of books to explore.

Let's dive into what you'll be reading in each grade at Agora!

6th Grade - English A Reading List

Your 6th grade reading adventure begins with a diverse mix of fantasy, historical fiction, and adventure stories! The reading list includes beloved classics like "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle and "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis, which will transport you to magical worlds.

For historical fiction fans, you'll explore American history through "Johnny Tremain" and "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry." Science fiction enthusiasts will enjoy Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles," while adventure seekers can dive into "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne.

The list also includes timeless stories about growing up like "Tuck Everlasting" and animal tales such as "Old Yeller" and "White Fang." Your K12 curriculum specifically provides "Tom Sawyer" and "The Secret Garden" as core texts.

Pro Tip: The "L" numbers before each title show the book's Lexile level - a measure of reading difficulty. Lower numbers (700s) are generally easier reads, while higher numbers $1000+$ offer more challenge. Choose books that interest you at different levels to grow your reading skills!

7th Grade - English B Reading List

In 7th grade, you'll continue your literary journey with many of the same options as 6th grade, allowing you to select books you didn't read previously. This flexible approach lets you choose works that match both your reading level and personal interests.

Fantasy adventures like "The Fellowship of the Ring" by J.R.R. Tolkien and mystery classics like "The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle offer exciting journeys into imagination and suspense. Historical fiction options such as "War Comes to Willy Freeman" and "Dragonwings" provide windows into different time periods and cultures.

The K12 curriculum specifically provides "The Hobbit" and "Treasure Island" for 7th graders - two thrilling adventure stories that have captured readers' imaginations for generations. "The Hobbit" serves as a perfect introduction to Tolkien's Middle-earth before tackling "The Fellowship of the Ring."

Reading Challenge: Try picking books from different genres throughout the year! If you usually read fantasy, try historical fiction or science fiction to discover new favorite authors and styles.

8th Grade - Literary Analysis & Composition

Eighth grade takes your reading to a deeper level with the Literary Analysis & Composition course. Unlike previous grades, this year features completely different books that tackle more complex themes and ideas. These books will challenge you to think critically about society, human nature, and moral choices.

The reading list includes powerful classics like "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, which uses animal characters to explore political ideas, and "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, which examines racial injustice in the American South. "Lord of the Flies" shows what happens when children must create their own society on a deserted island.

Two non-fiction works are provided by K12: "Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl" and "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass." These true accounts will help you understand important historical periods through personal experiences.

Looking Ahead: These 8th grade books prepare you for high school literature by introducing more sophisticated themes and writing styles. The critical thinking skills you'll develop analyzing these works will serve you well in all your future classes!
