The Odyssey Books 9-12
4 - Aeolus
Od and his men land on
Aeolus' island and stay for a
month, eating plenty.
Aeolus gives Od a bag containing
all of the winds; only a gentle west
wind allowed to blow.
Od stays awake at the steering oar for 9
days; falls asleep on the 10th.
Od's crew, out of envy, open the bag
and let the winds out; the ship is blown
back to Aeolus' island.
Aeolus refuses to help Od
again and ejects him.
8- The Sirens
Od lays out the plan beforehand:
wax in crew members' ears and
Od tied to the mast so he can
listen to the Sirens' song.
The crew rows and
Od gets to listen.
The ship makes it through
safely; no one is lost.
1- The Cicones
Odysseus and his men attack a
city of the Cicones.
The Cicones get their
cousins to counterattack.
Od loses about
10% of his men.
5- The Laestrygonians
Od and his ships find the L's port;
Od keeps his ship outside of the
towering harbor walls.
The L people are monstrous and
cannibalistic. They attack the men
Od sends to see them and eat one
of them.
The L's attack the ships, and only
Od's ship survives; the others are
destroyed in the harbor.
2- Lotus-Eaters
Antinous is the
main Suitor
9 - Scylla & Charybdis
Od does not tell the crew the whole
plan; orders them to keep rowing,
stay away from Charybdis.
Od does not tell them about Scylla.
The crew rows to stay away
from Charybdis, but as a result,
Scylla takes 6 men.
Od sends three men to talk
with the Lotus-Eaters.
The men eat lotus, forget about
wanting to go home.
Od and his men kidnap
them and row away.
6- Circe
Od splits his crew into two groups;
Od leads one group and
Eurylochus leads the other.
Eury's group goes to scout
out Circe's home.
Eury suspects something is up and
leaves; the rest of the men are
turned to pigs by Circe.
Hermes' plan works (of course) and
all of Od's men (except Eury) spend a
year at Circe's home.
10 - Helios' Cattle
Od, following the guidance of
Teiresias and Circe, tells the men
they need to pass by the island.
Eurylochus complains, refuses.
The crew promises not to harm the
livestock on the island.
Eury's group is met by wolves and lions
that stand up on hind legs and greet
them like happy dogs.
A storm comes up, and the winds
are horrible for a month.
Eurylochus convinces the crew
to break their promise.
Od takes his shipmates (12 of them) to
discover who the Cyclopes are.
Od and his men feast on
Polyphemus' cheese and goats.
Poly traps Od and his men in his cave.
Od tries to reason with Poly, but
Poly eats 2 of his crew.
Eury reports what happened to his team
and refuses to go back; Od takes his
men toward Circe's home.
Helios complains to Zeus; Zeus
declares he'll thunderbolt the
ship once it's at sea.
3- The Cyclopes
When it is time to go, Circe prepares Od
for his trip to Hades and provides for the
sacrifice he must make.
Once at sea, Zeus makes good on
his promise; Od is the only one left
alive, though the ship is destroyed.
Od gets past Scylla and Charybdis.
Poly kills 4 more men, then Od
comes up with a plan.
Od gives Poly strong wine, tells him his
name is Nobody, and Poly goes to sleep.
Hermes talks with Od, gives him the key to
avoiding Circe's spell and tells him how to
make her change his men back.
Od and his men poke out Poly's
eye with a sharpened pole.
Od and his men sneak out riding under Poly's sheep.
While rowing away, Od mocks Poly
and tells him his real name.
Poly calls on his dad, Poseidon, to curse Od.
7- Hades
Od makes the proper sacrifices
to speak to the dead.
Elpenor is the first of the dead to talk
to Od; Od promises to go back to
Circe's land and bury him.
Teiresias is next; he tells Od some of
his path home and speaks prophesies
regarding Od's future.
Od talks with his
own mother.
Od talks with Greek warriors,
including Agamemnon and
Achilles.
Upon their return to Circe's island,
Odysseus buries Elenor.
11 - Calypso
Odysseus does not retell this
story in Book 12; he had retold
it earlier in the epic.
