Ever wondered how to crack the code of any text... Show more

Reading comprehension isn't just about getting through your English homework - it's the foundation for succeeding in every subject. Whether you're tackling a science textbook or analysing a poem, these skills will transform how you approach any text.
You'll learn to identify main ideas in different types of writing, from straightforward news articles to complex literary pieces. More importantly, you'll discover how to separate the essential information from the fluff that authors use to support their points.
Critical thinking becomes your best mate when you learn to question what authors are really trying to say. You'll spot bias, evaluate evidence, and make connections that aren't spelled out directly.
Quick Tip: Think of reading like detective work - you're hunting for clues that reveal the author's main message!

Think of every text as having a skeleton - the main idea is the backbone, while supporting details are all the other bones that give it shape. The main idea answers "What's this really about?" whilst supporting details answer "How do we know that's true?"
The main idea is the central point an author wants you to remember. Sometimes it's stated directly in a clear sentence, but often you'll need to piece it together from clues throughout the text. Filipino literature like Rizal's 'Noli Me Tangere' cleverly weaves its main message about colonial corruption through storytelling rather than stating it outright.
Supporting details are your evidence - they're the facts, examples, and explanations that make the main idea believable. Without these details, the main idea would be like a house without foundations.
Remember: Supporting details answer the "How?", "Why?", "When?" and "Where?" questions about your main idea!

Finding main ideas gets loads easier when you know where to look. Think of it as having a treasure map with three reliable routes to your goal.
The topic sentence method is your first port of call. Most paragraphs, especially in textbooks, put their main idea right at the beginning. Read that first sentence carefully - if the rest of the paragraph explains or expands on it, you've found your main idea.
The frequency method works like counting votes. Look for words, phrases, or concepts that keep popping up throughout the text. If something gets mentioned repeatedly, it's probably central to the author's message.
The umbrella method asks you to think big picture. What one concept could cover all the different details mentioned? For instance, if a text mentions Sinulog, Ati-Atihan, and Panagbenga, the umbrella idea might be "Philippine festivals."
Pro Strategy: When stuck, ask yourself "What would I tell a mate this text was about in one sentence?"

Supporting details aren't all created equal - knowing the different types helps you understand how authors build their arguments. It's like recognising different tools in a toolkit.
Facts and statistics give you the hard evidence. When an author claims the Philippines has incredible biodiversity, they'll back it up with concrete numbers like "52,000 species" or "5% of world's flora." These details make arguments rock-solid.
Examples and illustrations make abstract ideas real. Instead of just saying Filipino values are unique, an author might explain 'pakikipagkapwa' through specific stories or situations you can actually picture.
Explanations and elaborations break down complex stuff into bite-sized pieces. They're the author's way of saying "Let me help you understand this better" by answering those crucial how and why questions.
Spot the Pattern: Good authors mix different types of supporting details to keep you engaged and convinced!

Authors have even more tricks up their sleeves to make their main ideas stick. Comparisons and contrasts help you understand new concepts by relating them to things you already know - like explaining pakikipagkapwa by contrasting it with Western individualism.
Causes and effects show you how things connect. They're brilliant for understanding relationships and consequences. If an author's discussing environmental issues in the Philippines, they might explain both what's causing problems and what effects we're seeing.
These different types of supporting details work together like ingredients in a recipe. The best authors don't just use one type - they mix facts with examples, throw in some comparisons, and explain the causes and effects to create a complete picture.
Reading Hack: Once you spot these patterns, you'll start predicting what type of detail comes next!

Reading isn't a passive sport - the best readers are constantly questioning and evaluating what they're reading. It's like being a detective gathering evidence rather than just accepting everything at face value.
Question everything as you read. Ask yourself what the author's really trying to achieve, whether their evidence actually proves their point, and what they might be leaving out. These questions transform you from a passive reader into an active thinker.
Identify the author's purpose and bias by considering why they wrote the piece. A textbook about the Marcos era aims to inform objectively, but a memoir from someone who lived through martial law will have a completely different purpose and perspective.
Evaluate the evidence like you're marking someone else's homework. Are the supporting details actually relevant? Is the evidence recent and reliable? Does the author's reasoning make sense, or are there gaps you could drive a lorry through?
Critical Thinking Tip: Always ask "What's the author not telling me?" - the gaps can be as revealing as what's included!

Sometimes the most important stuff isn't written down directly - you need to become a master of reading between the lines. Making inferences means using clues from the text plus your own knowledge to understand what the author implies but doesn't state outright.
Think of inference as educated guessing based on evidence. If a character in a Filipino short story keeps looking at old photographs and sighing, you can infer they're feeling nostalgic, even if the author never uses that word.
To make solid inferences, combine text clues with what you already know about the topic. Consider what the author assumes you understand, and use logical reasoning to connect the dots. It's like solving a puzzle where some pieces are hidden.
The key is balancing what's actually in the text with reasonable assumptions. Don't go wild with your interpretations, but don't be afraid to read deeper than the surface level either.
Inference Pro-Tip: Good inferences feel obvious once you've made them - like saying "Of course, why didn't I see that before?"

Let's put these skills to work with actual Philippine texts. There's nothing like practicing with familiar cultural contexts to cement your understanding of reading comprehension strategies.
Take this passage from Paz Marquez Benitez's 'Dead Stars': "The stars were beautiful, but they were not hers. She belonged to the earth, to the solid, unromantic earth, and the stars were for dreaming, not for having."
The main idea explores the tension between dreams and reality - specifically how we must accept our earthbound limitations rather than chase impossible fantasies. Notice how this isn't stated directly but emerges through the imagery and word choices.
The supporting details work brilliantly together: "beautiful stars" shows the appeal of dreams, "but they were not hers" emphasises separation, "solid, unromantic earth" contrasts harsh reality with beautiful dreams, and the final phrase distinguishes between fantasy and what's actually achievable.
Literature Insight: Philippine writers often embed their main ideas in imagery and symbolism rather than stating them directly - perfect practice for your inference skills!

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
